Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Forgive me, but how can these birds win with white ears or a black eye? Their type is very nice for sure but I understood that white ears and black eyes were at least faults if not dq. Please, explain.
I know it is hard to tell in the pictures but they have orange eyes. The lobe is not white, there is a difference between absence of color and actual white. I know the difference and so did the judges. Of course the picture makes it look worse too. They are heavy into lay and they have simply lost color in their lobes. The black copper hen has been nit picking her food too so hers is worse, I am giving her redcell for a while to try to improve it.

Thanks Wynette they said they really liked you too!

I should sooooooo be starting seeds!

Just haven't found the time nor the gumption! I'm jealous that you get to spend the day doing it. Not jealous of the storms coming your way though...hope they go by quick fast and in a hurry! But totally and completely understand why you are waiting.
usually I have to work myself up to starting seeds as it is an all day process. This first round I'll just do as much as I have soil for and pick another day for the next set

Now now, have a little faith Choptank!

Vicki~ I'm getting pretty excited as tomorrow should be hatch day for those chickers from Raven! Whoop Whoop!

I will only have one chick hatch from my eggs...from my Blue Copper gal. The rest quit....I can't say that I am to torn up about that either because of that busy body Birchen boy that got out (only because I didn't latch the door

) and he was trying to wooo all the ladies. I don't think he made any progress with them as Mr. Will was pretty quick on the draw to keep him off his gals but can't be to safe.
Saved up a few eggs from this last couple weeks...the few they have given me anyway and will be putting those along with some goose eggs in the 'bator.

Also....that freeloadin' Roberta, the splash copper that hasn't given up an egg yet at almost 10 months old....was scratching around in the nest box the other day. For sure it better be a nice egg for her to hold out so long. Never had one take so long to lay.
yay for baby chicks!

Btw, Debbi says to come by FB to see her! We are chatting at the moment in fact.

I don't believe it has to be an actual protuberance to be a considered a sprig. So I would say yes it is a sprig if it is a raised bump.

oh say it aint so.... Spike gained a bump recently, it might all be down to Twizzler in the end.. I have a bunch of 9 week olds to look at but really so far they don't look great, they just eat alot LOL!!!

I am sorry to read this and trust me, myself and many other folks know how you are feeling about it Do you have a photo of the bump to share?

This is certainly a more clear answer. I am not meaning to be unkind or taking away any joy in the win. Their type is good, but I don't understand the lack of color in the ears. I am confused.
