Here is a poor pic of the pullet with the most copper. The sheen is mostly green but for some reason it looks blue with this camera....

I have had very poor results hatching BCM eggs until last go around.... At $20 per egg I am sure happy i did well with those... Paid for 12 hatched 9. I used 40% during the first 18 days 60% days 19-21 and 65% during the hatch. I followed the recommendations that Brenda gave me and it worked.

Ha... This is my 4th try with BCMs and up until now I have 1 previous bird to show for it. And the only reason I kept her is that she lays a perfectly shaped, 6-7 egg with no meatspots....

Combs seem to be very "flimsy" on the pullets... They dont flop over per say but dont stand up stiffly either... They are also smaller than what ive seen in my others. Males combs seem fine maybe too many points...

Don, i hatched out 8 little peddler chicks in December and have found NO mossiness whatsoever in any of them. The black is by far the blackest of ant BCMs I ve hatched including the fluff. The pullets all have some copper in the hackles except 1 which is totally black. One has real nice copper...

I have 8 from brenda little that I hatched dec 31. I haven't culled anything yet but there are a few that will definitely go to the layer pen. Observations so far. The black is really black... A solid plus. Color balance and color of copper on males really nice. A solid plus. Leg color...

Yes, There are some dedicated breeders on this thread that I would trust... Some advice to anyone looking for eggs or birds.... Dont rush in, read this thread for a while and ask lots of questions before moving ahead. There is no quick way forward with this breed but there are some excellent...

So sad that this happens over and over . This is the only reason I started breeding chickens myself... To help people avoid some of this down the line. My only goal is to breed birds that reliably produce offspring that meet the SOPs and in this case (marans) produce an egg in the 6+ range...

Its really not that simple...once you get one generation away from the actual line originator (in this case Bev) all bets are off. One has no idea what else went in to subsequent generations. People use the term "line" very loosely and it really comes down to asking lots of questions and getting...

Basically, the same painful advice I received from Don... I didn't really want to accept it at the time due to the time effort AND money invested up to then so I waited a little while did a little test breeding and when in came down to it the birds would have been a little more tender had I...

Please don't mind Don's matter of fact nature... While he might not win any congeniality awards in the near future, most will learn a ton from him, if they listen... His breadth of knowledge and experience is pretty impressive IMHO. I am usually only a lurker here but read EVERY one of his posts...

Yes meat spots are very common with BCMs. That is the main reason i went out and purchased my little peddler stock. Not sure if they will be better but felt it was worth trying them. To me it always comes down to egg quality in the end... I cant have a chicken, no matter how great a...

They were pretty dark on the stomachs... I wish I took some good pictures to show but never quite got around to it . They have no white feathers at all.., the black is very , well... Black if that makes any sense

Ha... Do you know of any without issues... So far s few have too much copper on their chests but other than that no major flaws at 2 months. I will not cull any until after they grow out. The one thing that I have noticed is how black their feathers are compared to any I ve raised to date. It...

Donna, all good advice here. I have a question regarding the chick color... I agree with you for the most part here, black and white or they likely have something else in there. In the case of Brenda Little's birds, the chicks are pretty much black. Therefore this would be an exception to this...

They look young for 2.5 months but the top is a pullet the bottom looks more like a pullet to me but could be a cockerel... Here are a few if mine at 2.5 months.

I agree with Donna The first pic shows the egg with the "dented" side up and The second pic shows the "dented" side down.My theory is that the pullet was standing when she laid the egg and and it was dented on the large end when it dropped onto the wood... Love, love, love the round eggs but it...
