I finally caved and gave my broody Australorp Louise of Thelma and Louise eggs. I was trying to postpone until the set date for the Easter Hatchalong. I gave her some LF that I will let her keep and raise and some bantam I will pull to the brooder after hatch.
Take the egg inside and put it close to a heat source. Desk lamp for example. Put a thermometer by it and keep it as close to 100*. Wrap a damp paper towel around it also.
My LF flock is a mix of laying hens Orp, Wyandotte, Australorp, and EE. My roos are Ameracauna project rejects because of feather color. I let them brood when ever they feel like it and have hatched out a bunch if chicks. Out of the ones I've chose to keep based on feather color they are laying...
In no way would I advise you to break the law, but if you shooting the hawk is out of the question why not make it think you are. I'd get some bottle rockets and send then in close proximity to the hawk.
I have a Australorp that go's broody once a year. She stays with her chicks until they leave her. I think its a wise way to keep the roos at bay. Hen with 4 month old babies. She is a wonderful Mama.
I had a accidental breeding in my rabbits. I found 5 kits on the wire in a fur nest last night. Unfortunately I didn't find them soon enough and they had all died.I had given a rabbit to a girl I work with. I told her to check her rabbit. It was pulling hair. She gave it a next box. Neither of...
Correct me if I'm wrong. Olivia is a Silkie and you gave her 4 Buff Orp eggs. This is her first time being broody.
I don't think I would give her anymore eggs. My buff eggs are huge and 4 would be a good size clutch for a young Silkie to cover. If you add more eggs she may not be able to...
I have a Silkie roo who let's the chicks sleep under him. He acts just like a Mama hen.
I would watch him and see how he acts. It should be pretty clear how he will be the first time you feed them together.
Now that's a different story all together. With out the flock protection they are just squeaky toys.
I had a mama cat and kittens in the garage were I have all my brooders, rabbits and quail. The brooders have locked tops so those are safe. I had a incubator with 12 quail hatching. I didn't...
If they are regular domesticated cats I wouldn't worry about them much. The hens and roo will keep the chick safe. I have 12 cats and they know better that ho near the chicks. They don't like to be flogged anymore than we do.
I have 10 or so cats. Non of them will take on a mama hen. Even the kittens who think the chicks are toys learn fast that they will bring on the rather of the flock if they go near.
I started taking my broody bantam in just because the others would not stay out of their nest. After their...
My broody frizzle Silkie has a chick hatched and it looks Splash. I sure hope it does good and is a pullet that looks like my best Silkie hen I had to put down because it had wry neck. She still has 6 eggs in the nest.
When I first got chicks, ducks and turkeys I fed medicated starterand had no problems with any. Later I got quail I fed them medicated until I used up the feed I had. I switched to game bird starter. The only problem I've seen is when I move chicks from the brooder outside sometimes I have to...
