I have a hen who's pair of 14 wks cockerels just left her side new years Eve..
I have a turkey that hatched a pullet in August that are still together. Should be interesting when one goes broody.
I have never taken a broody off the nest. Sounds like a good way to get broken eggs. They have been raising young for a long time and their instincts are good.
Last year I had at least 3 dz Chicken and 25 turkeys that went broody. The turkey that flew over the fence is the only one I had...
Usually the broody protects the chicks. I leave them in the coop. The ones that have a nest out in the yard brings her chicks back in a week or two to the coop.
Do you have a plan for the cockerels? I usually have 70% boys.
They get louder when they have pipped. I got woke up one night by the cheep over the noise of the air cleaner. The incubator is in a different bedroom with the bathroom in-between. :barnie two had pipped, they were out by morning.
I had been hearing cheeps for over a day
They will want out when the chicks get active. usually about 3days after they hatch they are hungry. They have absorbed yolk they use for about 3 days before they start eating.
I have had an egg hatch 4 days late in the incubator.
Food and water just out of reach has her getting up and less chance of pooping on the eggs.
Mine usually get up the hottest part of the day. Although I have had a few get up first thing.
I have had some go back to the wrong nest box and the eggs were cold but still hatched, probably off for 6 hrs.
Mine get off when they want, 10 minutes to an hour. Eggs can get broken if they aren't cooperating when we take them off.
Most of mine sit tight the first few days and last few.
I leave mine with the flock. Usually they are accepted by the flock. I have had a couple problems over the years with chicks getting injured by adults. But I usually have hens hatch around 50 chicks a year. I also have turkeys who I blame for the problems lol
Move her at night. Put her in a carrier and eggs separate. Put eggs in new nest and put her a ft away if she is flighty. Might be able to put her on the eggs if she is calm. Block her off from old nest
Yes check the broodies.
I also had one hanging from the breast feathers. I heard it and seen mom was running around looking for it and it was swinging around by it's neck. I was able to rescue.
Keep the food and water so she has to get off the nest. Some people have had them poop on the eggs if they can sit and eat.
She will get off for around an hour most days. Usually when your not around. Needs a dust bath spot.
She knows what to do... usually lol
