The person who designed it wanted to let the wast fall out to be easier to take care of. It is beginning to sound like it isn't going to make things easier.
This is a good idea, except doing so would interfere with the bigger door that is there to allow access to feeder and waterer. We will probably make the wider walkway.
There is a fenced yard that the coop is in. We will be increasing the height of the fence before they get too much bigger...
On the narrow side, there is a door within a door, for the chickens to leave and enter. We are going to lean a 2*4 that has been scored similar to the "ladder" inside, so the chickens can get in and out. It will be taken down after they have bedded down at night, and they will be sealed inside. I...
The coop is DONE!!! I Think it turned out very nice, especially when considering it is made from 2*4s and demolished shed parts. I took a few pictures of the building process and the final result (some with the chicks in the pics), http://imgur.com/a/ZaHpC#0
Here is the final result...
Since nowhere locally has any Silkies of Buff Orpingtons, this will be our flock....
If anyone can identify Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, we would be very happy to know.
Gryffindor came from the "assorted white layer" and Hufflepuff from the "assorted brown layer" bin.
Guesses are welcome...
Now that we are pretty sure the chicks aren't going to suffer from the stress of moving in, we parceled out and started coming up with names.
I am most proud of my daughter, who named her Ameraucana "Hen Solo"
She named the other Ameraucana "Omelette"
My son named his silver laced wyandotte...
SILKIES: My wife wants a blue silky pullet. The only person I saw mentioning silkies doesn't have anymore (and suggested more than one). Is there anyone near Roseburg that has a few "extra" silkie hens?
Honestly, I have not had much to do with leghorns except the white. To be fair, they were more cramped than they should have been. The only birds to fly the coop were the white leghorns, though. I have heard other people who had similar experience, so I am just not going to bother... especially...
Coastal on Garden Valley Boulevard (Roseburg) behind the car dealership on Stephens... They get a shipment in that they said would be available when they open at 8.... I listed what the manager said they would have above... and they will probably have most of them sold by the time they close...
UPDATE: Coastal will not be getting any RIR's in. According to the manager, they will have Buff Orpington, assorted brown and white, Barred Rock, Americauna, and red sexlink. They open at 8... We will be sitting in the parking lot waiting...
Right now, we have 2 Americana, 2 Wyandotte, a yellow sexlink and a barred rock chick(s), Tomorrow Coastal gets another shipment in, and I hope to get some Rhode Island Reds, and maybe another barred rock... maybe some more sexlinks since they tend to bigger eggs. I'll find out tomorrow...
I haven't responded to this for a while, because until a few days ago, we had been out of the chicken business. Now, here we are, in Roseburg, with a big fishtank with 6 chicks under a heating lamp. When they outgrow the tank, they will be moved down to my mothers place in Green.
Azalea, here....
We have added Araucanas and silkies to our list... My wife went overboard, s we had lots of extras... and 2 turkeys and 2 ducks and 2 geese.... I finally managed to sell off the extra silkies... now on the the extra araucanas... we are going from 7 chickens (one rooster in the...
Well, things have changed... we no longer have the little flock... Our original of a rooster and 2 black sex links and 3 RIR's grew a good bit with the adding of some mixed bantie/auracana/etc. and (out of 19 buffs) 2 Buff pullets and we kept ONE of the roosters, for a then total of 21.
We have...
