I also had reservations, but I also understand not everyone keeps their chickens penned up 24-7 like I do, and predators happen. I’m not going to judge these folks for one strike. But, if they lose these, they won’t be getting more from me, I’ll tell you that.

Well, they’re in their 70’s. I don’t feel right telling them how to do anything, know what I mean? I didn’t have any better rehoming options, and so they were doing me a favor just as much. As long as the chickens are smart enough to hang around their donkeys while they’re foraging, they might...

Just rehomed a young roo and a hen today. I had too many chickens in the enclosure. Wasn’t sure who should go. I chose the more relaxed roo and one of my feistier Buff O hens that is sort of a loner. They’re going to an acreage where they can free range and there are no other chickens yet. I...

Oh my gosh! I never rehomed my 2 Brahma mix cockerels. This morning I heard a crowing from the run. Not at all what I’d been expecting or worrying about. It was short, soft, gravelly, and actually kind of sweet. Maybe it will get louder later, but for now, I can’t imagine any of the neighbors...

I think you can get it without prescription at Tractor Supply, maybe Atwoods, whichever you have up there. I could be wrong, so you should probably call and ask before going. Last time I used antibiotics, I got some from my mom, who happened to have it on hand. Just an opinion, if you can...

I get that. I actually live in OKC, not on the outskirts, but 7 min. from downtown. We aren't the only ones to have chickens in our neighborhood, but I hear more noise made by dogs than anything. OKC laws are also murky, which I think is why we get away with it without paying for permits and...

I could use a little advice. It's coming time to try to rehome 2 brahma mix cockerels, as they are 2 months old and I'm starting to like them too much. I was going to put up some posts with pictures on a couple of Oklahoma Facebook poultry pages. Is there anything I can do to increase their...

Here's the cockerel I am going to try to rehome soon. There may be another, but this guy's obvious. I still can't figure out exactly what breeds are going on here. He has both barred and laced feathers, and still a stumpy tail. Pea comb, feathered legs.

I don't know if you still have that cockerel, but if you are on Facebook, there are local poultry pages where a lot of sales and swaps happen. I assume rehoming, as well. I plan on getting on there myself to attempt to rehome at least one barnyard mix cockerel, but I know the chances of that...

I have another broody. I can't do another hatch, so I will reluctantly have to break her. I could let her hatch, but I wouldn't be able to let her keep any, and that would be sad.

Here's our 4 new chicks. Mama is never far away. They learned how to drink from the nipple waterer this week. I'm still not sure what breed or mix of breeds they are. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to tell gender before any crowing starts. The other hens are tolerating them ok for the time being.

We ended up keeping 4 of the chicks. The others went to a country home with friends of the family. I can't tell their breed, nor gender. I'm sure I'll be asking around in about 4 or 5 weeks. Mama is doing a great job taking care of them and getting them integrated. I haven't seen a squabble in a...

Ok, so we have 11 living chicks. Mama hen and chicks aren't being nice to the latecomers, so I put them in a brooder setup together. They both have foot issues, but it looks fixable. I'm planning on rehoming most of the chicks, so these might be the two I end up keeping. Not sure yet, because...

We've got 8 chicks out of 12 eggs. Would have been 9 but one died under mama hen. I think it was malformed as there was egg yolk all over it. The yolk caused the chick to be stuck to mamas feathers and she was dragging it around on her belly. I had to remove it, as much as I didn't want to cause...

My broody hatched out at least two chicks a day early. She won't let me have a good look yet, but I saw two very dark babies in there. I hope she is nice to them since she's a first timer and hasn't seen a chick since she herself was one.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mamas! It's day 19. I'm getting anxious. Decided it was best not to get her off the nest today. Instead, I'm going to clean the coop, and set up her little maternity ward, so she can stay put and still have food and water close by. I sooo want to peek at her eggs...

I know broodies lose weight, and act lethargic, but picking Honey up just makes me feel sad for her. She has about a week more to go, and I'm having to get her out of the nest to eat and care for herself some days. When I pick her up, she feels so light and bony, it's freaking me out a little...

I have a broody hatch due May 15. They will be barnyard mix. If anyone would like some free chicks, I'll be posting an update with pics once the hatch happens because I have not even candled the eggs yet. I'm in OKC.
