***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My broody hatched out at least two chicks a day early. She won't let me have a good look yet, but I saw two very dark babies in there. I hope she is nice to them since she's a first timer and hasn't seen a chick since she herself was one.
Congrats! They usually do well even on the first time

We've got 8 chicks out of 12 eggs. Would have been 9 but one died under mama hen. I think it was malformed as there was egg yolk all over it. The yolk caused the chick to be stuck to mamas feathers and she was dragging it around on her belly. I had to remove it, as much as I didn't want to cause stress to mom.

She did let me handle her babies afterward, though. They're too cute! I think all are feather footed mongrels, but I'm not good at telling a chick's breed. I attempted to wing sex a few, but have no idea what I'm doing.

Now to see if anyone wants some mongrel chicks. I can only keep 2.

Ok, so we have 11 living chicks. Mama hen and chicks aren't being nice to the latecomers, so I put them in a brooder setup together. They both have foot issues, but it looks fixable.

I'm planning on rehoming most of the chicks, so these might be the two I end up keeping. Not sure yet, because I don't know how long it will take to find them homes.

I really don't blame my first time mama hen for not wanting the brand new babies, because she's busy with 9 others who hatched early or on time.

Can anyone recommend neighborhoods/areas to look into for buying a house? We're moving back to the OKC area in September/October, and I need to have chickens this time!

Duh, areas around OKC, Midwest City... Tinker AFB. The husband would prefer not to be more than 20mins from the base, but we also need to be 20-25mins from the Douglas Park area.

We ended up keeping 4 of the chicks. The others went to a country home with friends of the family. I can't tell their breed, nor gender. I'm sure I'll be asking around in about 4 or 5 weeks. Mama is doing a great job taking care of them and getting them integrated. I haven't seen a squabble in a few days. She's still not comfortable with me taking pictures of her babies, but as soon as she is, I'll show them off. Also, one of my 2 yo. hens is starting to look like a cockerel. She might be one of those weird she/he hens I've heard about. As long as she doesn't crow, it's not an issue to us.

Hello! I’m new to BYC. We live in the Ada area and have several chickens. Me and my sweet daughters are about to try our hand at hatching our first batch of eggs:)

Nice to “meet” you all!
:welcome Glad you have joined.
Will you incubate or let a hen hatch your eggs?
Good luck either way!
I have ducklings hatching in the incubator and a broody hen just hatched 4 chicks today.

Looking for a chicken vet, Central OK. One of my hens broke some of her beak and needs professional care. Anybody around the Shawnee area work on chickens?
