I love all my breeds but the aras are delightful chicks. I live in FNQ where daytime temps on the top of the mountains can still be reasonable even in the depths of winter (the lowest here has been -7 however) but nights can get very cold. I find that I still need to keep my bubs under lights...
acv - apple cider vinegar - of course that's what it means! I really should have known that. I will add a little today. I have a bulk container for the flock. Brain just not in gear. Thanks. I have a thermostat on my lights, so that I can gradually wind the temp down when needed. I reduce it...
Thanks for that. Space isn't an issue with this one as there are only four chicks in that brooder, but I have to admit the second one, with the newest bubs, is getting rather full. Looking for something larger!! What is acv?
That was an excellent link about pasty butt. I have, unknowingly, done the correct thing with the two chicks that had this even down to the hair dryer. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
I hope the eye clears up soon. We do tend to worry about our babies, don't we?
I've been really busy lately so haven't been on - heaps of new babies to tend to. I have increased my flock with a pair of Araucanas - she's partridge, he's Black breasted Red; a pair of gold & silver/black silkies...
Thanks Fizzybelle. I thought/hoped that would be the case. Thanks for letting me know. I don't have any closeups of either 'arry or 'arriet - must take some - but they are beautiful and much like your Mabel. 'arry looks very regal with his cream hackles. I always think of Gainsborough's painting...
Just an update on my pekins. They are all doing well. Ralph is still sneezing occasionally; Freckles now doesn't have any symptoms; Chickadee has come good but his eyes still look a little sore; Billy became very ill and had to go back to the vet for an injection and I have given him oral...
After seeing this morning's news of the storms continuing down south, we are hoping that you and everyone else in the affected areas are okay. Thinking of you all. I'm off to hospital in the morning for a minor procedure but I will still be thinking of you. Should be back on deck on Monday...
I am so sorry it's so difficult for you right now. Hope your chicks under lights are okay and that you get the coops and fences fixed quickly. Sounds like one of our cyclones. Chin up and know that we are all thinking of you.
Good luck with the heavy weather. Thinking of you with snow while we get around in t-shirts and shorts and soaking up the sun. Sorry, don't mean to rub it in - in the summer we will be sweltering while you will be quite comfortable! Take care of your babies.
When we lived in New South Wales, we had some goats, a few silkies, a couple of muscovy ducks and their vicious drake as well as three indian runner ducks (3 eggs every day - wonderful) but when we were away foxes got in and killed the three ducks. The rest were okay - no fox lights available...
Do you use a fox light? We don't have foxes here, but do have a family of dingoes on an adjoining property, however, no problems at all since the fox light was installed inside the main pen.
Luckily, most people in my area don't have cats - not that I don't like them, I have had some beautiful cats when I lived in the suburbs of Sydney, but with lots of small birds cavorting in our trees we prefer not to have them around. Our problem is hunting dogs and the occasional dingo.
I...
How did your excavations go? And how did you babies react to all the work? I haven't tried meal worms yet - guess I should as everyone seems to recommend them. Just a treat or a regular thing?
One of my friends on the Tablelands did a swap with me today. She has so many beautiful birds - a bit...
Hi Fizzybelle - I know what you are going through. My girls are always trying to sit on top of other girls that are laying. They drive me crazy. They have so many nesting boxes, yet they all seem to like the same one and it's nothing to see three crammed in, on top of each other. When one is...
I was chatting to hubby about the vet and he reminded me that when I asked about boiling the eggs and feeding them to the chooks, he hesitated and didn't sound too enthusiastic, so he may not have known the answer to that one. Anyway, best to be safe than sorry. All eggs have been disposed of...
