Henriettasmum, here's my Mabel, a lavender Araucana. She likes to sit and cuddle with me, the bottom pic is just so you can see the body shape. I'm guessing your pair look like her? Mabel's five months now, and finally starting to get her adult shape and plumage, though she's had a wing clipped, she's a little too adventurous. Comb is still flat, and eyes are a beautiful brown, though they're meant to change colour I believe as she matures. Barely a day goes by when she doesn't have something stuck in that beard of hers.

That beard makes her look so wise.

Thanks Fizzybelle. I thought/hoped that would be the case. Thanks for letting me know. I don't have any closeups of either 'arry or 'arriet - must take some - but they are beautiful and much like your Mabel. 'arry looks very regal with his cream hackles. I always think of Gainsborough's painting 'Blue Boy' when I look at him. So gorgeous.

I swapped a couple of my beautiful white pure silkies for some "Araucanas" recently - different colours, white, black and brown, but on closer inspection I think that the brown and white have something else in them. The brown looks like it has some pekin but is absolutely beautiful with her little round bum. I will just consider them Easter Eggers as they are laying blue/green eggs and so I am looking for some more true Araucanas to give 'arry some more wives and 'arriet gets some peace occasionally!

No news of note from here …. Blondie broke a foot feather a couple of weeks ago, causing her to limp for a day but no bleeding or infection issues etc. Tuesday, two weeks later, she breaks another one .. she sure has problems with her oversized, feathered clown shoes

I had a chuckle earlier this morning when the neighbour fired up his lawn mower and they all attempted to retreat up the ramp to the safety of the coop .. Cilla, who was already in the coop, was standing in the door way, stopping anyone from entering and traffic was banking up on the ramp

Our overnight temps have been back up in the 15’s, 16’s and 17’s and today’s maximum is predicted to be 27 .. winter had better not be over, I am nowhere near ready for another long, hot summer!

Ahh, the U.S standard is different to our, and the UK standards. In the U.S, our Araucanas would be classified as Amerucanas, as their Araucanas are rumpless and have ear tufts. The annoying thing is those who stubbornly think the U.S standard is the be all and end all. So rest assured, your birds so long as they haven't been crossbred are Aussie Araucanas I'll try to find and share a recent pic of my little Araucana Mabel, a beautiful bird in looks and personality.

I now have a question - a while ago I bought three lavender Araucanas. One was eaten by a 3 metre scrub python but I was still left with a pair. Today I was researching them as I have put some eggs in the incubator and, according to American sites, they are not actually Araucanas as they have tails. They say they are Easter Eggers. I don't really mind as they are gorgeous birds and I love the coloured eggs, but I'd like to know. Someone on one of the sites I looked at, commented that in some countries they are called Araucanas. What is everyone's opinion on this?

I agree with all others who have answered your question.
Frankly, I don't know why Americans bother to argue so much about this, especially with people from other countries

. They originate from Chile, and the Chilean Araucanas, do indeed have tufts sticking out from both sides of their heads. Some of those tufts are really prominent and full. And they are rumpless - mostly. Apparently some Americans crossed Chilean Araucanas with some breeds of their own to produce the Ameraucana, which is sometimes rumpless, sometimes not, but the main aim of that crossing of breeds was to try to eliminate the prominence of pure Aras' inherited problems. This reduced the tufts, and added tails, some quite small and some larger upright.

I don't think we have the pure bred Chilean araucana here at all, however, because ours and British / European Aras' have beards, small tufts on either sides of their head, AND lay blue to greenish eggs, they are accepted as Araucanas. And not all the American alleged pure breds always sport both tufts and rumplessness. Which is I guess, why there are so many darned arguments. !! Agree with Fizzybelle ... it is annoying that the Americans, claim they are first and foremost, the be all and end all, when it comes to this breed.

This Ara, would probably win prizes in America : yet many sites quote how very rare the true Araucana really is.




Your girl is an Australian Araucana ... not an Easter Egger which is an American idea for a name for birds that lay blue, green, olive and other grey/green shades. I would continue to see her as an Araucana, despite what the the U.S. bods say about it. And ( from googling ) ... the 'true' (?) Araucana does lay blue eggs, but with a few green eggs thrown in for good measure ??

. Some have claimed they lay only pure blue eggs. Not so.

SHBURNHAM your Araucana are stunning!! I hope to have some by next year. Lovely birds. TELIA yes, I will post pics. Today I bought the builder up to speed with the design. Then we marked out the post holes and bevelled the edges of the cypress posts. I spent the rest of the day mowing. FANCYCHOOKLADY the Barnvelder has gone down hill. One of the Belgians, and the Light Sussex showed similar early onset symptoms. It is stressful. They are on Oxymav as of today, a tetracycline. If the Barnie isn't showing improvement within 48 hours I will cull. I can't have this transfer to the peacock. Especially as I'm about to pick up some more from my breeder this month.

Appps, maybe I should keep my mouth shut, we need sunshine to keep working on the nest boxes this weekend. Plus I'm sooooo sick of cleaning and drying little dirty feathered feet! I swear last shower a few days ago, about an hour before bed Beatrice managed to get as wet as she could, on purpose, just so she could have her feathers blow dried. Little smart alec was falling asleep whilst I dried her.
