If I were you, I would use the smaller squared hardware wire for the run. (I think they make 1/2".) Then, I would fasten a board to the run under the coop where there is a gap. Then I would use some sort of hinge or latch system (sturdy ones) to attach the run to the coop. You could make it...
I am not sure they can get in but they can still reach in their hands and rip the head off a chicken. (They do this trying to pull the chicken through the wire.)
