Faverolles are bad to do that as well. My rooster used to have an awesome beard but his ladies are continually "grooming" it out for him, lol.
This should begin to shrink as the chick moves around and dries out.
I do this too!
The tufted ones are very cute!
Tyler has my sympathy! Kidney...
Well, I suspect I am through with a less than stellar hatch. After my Friday and very early Saturday pip/hatches, I only had one more pip yesterday and it hatched this morning and is still drying out in the hatcher. The 5 Silkie eggs that I pulled out of the incubator Tuesday and put under my...
CONGRATS TO ALL WHO HAVE CHICKS/PIPS!
Someone need to let my Silkies in on this - they both totally ignore rain and continue right on foraging while the rest of the chickens run for cover. And, of course, they look like wet mops wandering around the yard.
Awesome page Kathy - how does...
How many days are they? According to Gail Damerow (Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens) you can safely stop turning after the first 14 days so they may be fine if they are at least that far along.
Happy Birthday and congrats on that great test score!
I'm glad you were wrong and will have some chicks from this hatch.
Congrats! Has it hatched yet?
I have wondered this myself. Trying to figure out how one could make a "nest" of something in the incubator. It wouldn't necessarily need to be made from straw or shavings. I wonder if you...
Congrats to all with pips already! Mahonri . . . breathe please, we need you to last at least through the next few days, lol!
Candled mine last night as the light (or the dark actually) is better. Only pulled one quitter but have a half dozen questionable that I marked. Finally figured out...
Just picturing the look on my husband's face if he spotted one of those eggs in the incubator. Hmmm . . . I'd love to put a fake one in there . . . for that matter, I'd love to put a real one in there!
Thanks Kathy, I may try it this time then. Congrats to you and your broody on a successful hatch! My Silkie hen that is broody is driving me nuts! She is "mobile broody". I have her in a 3' x 3' dog crate that has a nest box in it. Both the floor of the crate and the nest box are covered...
I think I have read that 3 times a day is sufficient. I am home all day usually and try to turn about every four hours (5 am, 9 am, 1 pm, 5 pm, 9 pm). But I don't stress if I miss a time because I forget or am not home. I doubt a hen sticks to a turning schedule!
Kathy, I have some of...
Myself, I would put eggs under her (I usually do this after dark to disturb the broody less). I have been blessed with 3 broodies so far during this hatch and have put eggs under all of them. Just be SURE your hen is truly settled down to work before you give her the eggs from the incubator...

Time to go swimmin' on Saturday....
I'm thinkin' I've got the flu my kids had.
Oh, joy.... of course, DW never gets it...
Candled last night and 38 of 48 left in the incubator. Both broodies had 7 each under them and I pulled a total of 5 of those. Then replaced the 5 with 5 from the incubator so now 33 left in the incubator. I think my Silkie hen is trying to go broody too so I'll probably put the 5 Silkie eggs...
