    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Not a ff question but a meat bird question... Also, I posted this in a couple of other places and some people thought I was asking about the fact he had eaten. My question is about the fact he was apparently impacted. Thanks! Hi everyone! My husband has now processed chickens twice- one earlier...

I think it is this thread where someone mentioned homemade mayo a little while ago. I am curious about the risk of salmonella, etc. from raw eggs. Please educate me

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

So I decided to start my day old that were hatched by broodies on ff. i ferment a variet of whole grains, add in sprouted lentils and then a dry mix of fertrell pnb, fish meal, and calcium. Since the babies can't have "whole grains", I put it all into a little food processor after I mixed it up...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Our first broody hen hatched out at least one chick so far today. My 2 yr old and I were so excited to see it when we went to check on her this morning. She quickly pulled the chick back out of view though. I have had some whole grains fermenting for the chicks when they hatch so this morning I...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I just started a gallon jar size of new ff two days ago. It has furry growth on it rather than the normal film I have seen on the top with our other ff. I did add probably a bit too much yogurt to this batch. Should I throw it out or scrape it off and add a little acv?

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

We were not fermenting our feed with our first baby chicks. I now mix and soak/ferment whole grains for our hens. We have baby chicks arriving in three days plus two broody hens. Can day old chicks eat fermented whole grains? Thanks!

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Any breed pros and cons for meat birds as far as taste, length of time until slaughter, amount of feed consumed from day 1 until slaughter, forage ability, etc? Such as cornish x vs a different meat bird. I am not looking for a dual purpose. We have rir for eggs. Thanks!

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Considering getting some meat birds. We ferment our grains - wheat, oats, milo plus flax and then add pnb and fish meal and lentil sprouts. Any reason to leave out fish meal in meat birds? It is included at 3-4% of diet for 16% protein mix. Obviously we will have to add more fish meal or sprouts...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I should have also mentioned that the smell is very strong. Sometimes stinky and sometimes bread smelling. We only ferment whole grains/seeds.

So our feed now has lots of gray on top. It started with spot like clumps and spider webbish looking lines out from it. Now it is pretty thick gray with bigger clumps of gray. Is this fermentation or something wrong?

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Ours free range too but they wait at the back door if they think I am bring food to them. I know they are getting plenty right now. I guess my situation will be different also come winter, even though we will plant some winter crops for them. I also feed our pigs ff and we have just moved them...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Thanks for the explanation. One more question though...if a chicken requires x amount of feed. Do you give that in dry weight multiplied by the ratio or in the ff weight?

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Two questions: 1: My ff just started having a gray film/spots on the top and a strong smell- sometimes stinky and sometimes like bread. Should I be concerned? We have been fermenting for a few weeks and it has not done this until recently. We did change to 2 big storage tubs instead of 5 gallon...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I know this is a crazy question, but I am fermenting grains for our pigs and chickens and then adding in each specific dry mix of sprouts, fish meal, etc. to the ff. My question is does anyone make their own dog feed? Our dogs love licking the bowls after we feed the chicks and pigs. Thanks!

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

My husband handled the ff while I was out of town. We are new to ff so it has only been me researching and dealing with it so far. Anyhow, he left a big metal spoon sitting in it all day today. He thought he was helping me by finding me a spoon to reach the bottom of the bucket. He didn't know...

That is what I have been using but it is not quite long enough to reach the bottom. Should I use 2 buckets instead?

What do you all find works well to stir and scoop with? I am using a 5 gallon bucket that is about 3/4 full and have a hard time reaching the bottom of the bucket.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

If I just started my ff for our pigs and chickens and for instance if a pig needs 2.5 lb of dry feed a day and the chickens need .25 lb of dry feed per day and I am only fermenting the whole grains, how much ff is equivalent to the dry feed they need per day? In my recipe, my ff dry mix is 82%...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

In reading on here, it seems lots of people use ACV in their ff. Is this just as an additive? I read elsewhere it is not a suitable culture and that you "don't have to" have anything added to get ff going. Is there added benefit to start with a culture? What would be good suggestions? I have...
