Well yesterday was hatch day, but I think because of my lowered temps (just got the Brinsea spot check and found I was off) they are delayed a bit. Today IS hatch day! I am really pleased with Kitchenchick's Barnvelders. So far I have 4 out and in the brooder (3 girls and one boy!) and one is...
Yes. My mother's do that if the chick is the wrong color (Black OEG killed any light colored chicks). I had a Blue Silkie peck at a black Sumatra chick I put under her the night before and chase it off but accept the brown Partridge Wyandotte Bantam chick - so I think some hens are prejudiced...
Thank you for those, always good to get more information.
The first one says it can be done to change male to female - but the resulting females' offspring are then all males.. I don't think I want those hens although the broiler raisers would. Its borderline and only 10% can be changed...
I took the last three unhatched eggs out of my incubator and put them under a broody hen who is hatching her brood right now. I would give them a chance just because. Mine were the same way, dark up to the air ring, red veins showing - but no internal or external pips.. and no peeps..
I so hope you find him. for his safe return.
Yay for hatching chicks and beating Cocci!
I am impatiently waiting for chicks to start pipping because today is day 21 on my Silkie eggs... Nothing yet. The first batch was much neater - they started on day 18 and finished up on day 21.. This...
Woo Hoo!
How old is she?
I suspect I have already had my first SFH egg.. however she is in with the bantams - so I didn't notice it. I have this feeling because one tan egg keeps getting bigger and bigger - and I KNOW the bantams can't do that...
Any chicken will eat an egg once its busted. What you need to do is make it so they can't break them - that will stop them from eating them. Also, putting something in the nest that looks like an egg but doesn't break will not reward the one that pecks on them (although ALL hens will peck at...
I am so glad you got them moving on that one. The thought of those poor little goslings sitting there in limbo and dying was awful. I am so glad you made a fuss and got it fixed!
I wish I had the cooperation of the Post Office over here, I don't trust live deliveries any more - or the "hold...
I am sorry about your Frizzle Tolblunt chick. It is hard to loose them. Is your Sulfamaxitone? Sulmet?
There are differing schools of thought on the cocci treatments. Some people say to expose the chicks as early as possible (like three days old) and do not feed medicated feed so they can...
