If I take Claritin too long my nose dries out and I get sores/nose bleeds - Anticholinergic effects unfortunately.

Have you tried Claritin or Zyrtec? Zyrtec works pretty well for me. When I need additional coverage because of grass pollen Nasacort or Flonase work really well.

The only birds that I have that lay daily all winter were Leghorns and Red Sex Links - but when I added a light to my coop in the morning they all went nuts and several even tried to brood in the winter which was annoying.

Blue as in the diluting gene or blue as in the shell color? Or is Blue the name of your rooster? :-P

Hello everyone! The other day I dug up very large larvae from my potato bed. I was about to ask what they were here but a quick google search yielded "Curl Grubs" as the answer - never heard of them before but I suspect they are what have been eating my potatoes. They are ugly little things...

I am a big fan of broodies doing the work in the winter - saves a lot on energy and effort on my end. I also need to do a flock reduction before I hatch again but I am having a really hard time figuring out which birds to sell.

You guys are giving me the hatching itch even though I already have way too many birds and don't need anymore little ones...

Just 6 eggs in that big ol' bator? I have a really hard time just doing so few and seeing all that open space - which is why I always end up with WAY more chicks than I need. Which Hovabator do you have? I started out with the 1602N then with the last hatch went to the 1588.

Whenever I see your posts I think about the hatching eggs I drove down to pick up from you ~3.5 years ago. I still have my favorite, friendly hen from that hatch who is still laying eggs and flying up to roost on my arm when I invite her. She is getting old but luckily I have her children and...

Welcome! I am near by in Shoreline, WA. There definitely are pros and cons to chicks vs adults. I am particular to day old chicks or really really knowing who you get your hens from because of the prevalence of poultry diseases that exist. Since you are in Seattle and cannot have a...

Congrats! That's an early laying bird! My project girls started around 18-20 weeks old this year, I was super excited to have them lay that young but you have me beat by 2 weeks!

Sort of both. I started my project crossing White Leghorns (for production) to Black Ameraucana birds then selecting birds to get back to Black feathering/shanks and blue eggs/pea combs. Someone at the University of Arkansas was doing the same thing already that I didn't know about and for the...

Bird netting should be sufficient to keep birds in as long as it is high enough up.

I finally got some decent pictures of my project birds! As much as I like and wanted blue birds, I really like the look of the black with the contrasting white earlobes and then the beetle sheen in the sun! My parents are enjoying them too, lots of medium sized blue eggs from these young...

I will have to keep this in mind. I have had at least 1 rooster since moving to my home before the re-wrote the rule about roosters. That should mean that I am grandfathered into the old code as well? Or is that status different based on which city you are in?

I've had a few around my pumpkin plants and apple tree. Those areas are rich in compost and have loads of worms - from what I have been told moles love areas that have lots of bugs to eat.

Both look like pullets to me as well. Mine are younger and the cockerels are showing much more red in their comb/wattles than these chicks.

Two of the blue birds I kept from my latest hatch on May 5th turned out to be cockerels. If anyone is interested in some blue egg gene carrying project Blue cockerels (most similar to University of Arkansas Blue Egger Layers) PM me :-). Essentially White Leghorn/Ameraucana crosses bred back to...

I presume you feed the seeds whole? I always wondered if they would better use the seeds pre-crushed or ground and I blended them before :-P. Their gizzard is a pretty amazing organ and I should just trust they can get the nutrients out of the whole seed.

Ahhhh got it, couldn't quite see the Rose comb if I had I would have had a better guess but I still would have been wrong! I always think of Wyandottes in only Silver and Gold laced birds, I forgot there was BBS variety. The brown one looks bigger than I would have expected a young Light...
