She was just gorgeous! I'm sorry for your loss. I've read so many wonderful things about this breed that I was really looking forward to the one Bielefelder egg I had hatching, but it just wasn't to be. <sigh> Birchie must be a sweetheart!
You do know you can raise chicks very successfully without a heat lamp, right? Lots of us are using Mama Heating Pad. I even brood my chicks in a pen outside in the run when temps are in the teens and twenties...
Okay, folks. Um, thanks for clearing that up. At least I won't look like a total ninny when I tell people what kind of chickens I have. But since nobody seemed to object to Deelyflopper, think I'll stick to that around home.
Now, let's just hope he hatches!!!
I so hope the one Bielefelder egg I have in the incubator hatches. Um, how the heck do you pronounce Bielefelder anyway? I've just been calling it the Deelyflopper egg.
I just use a bucket with vertical nipples for the first couple of days until I know they have the hang of the mechanism, then switch to horizontal nipples. Never a problem. The vertical nipples do tend to release little drops of water into the bedding when the chicks drink or hit the nipples...
