To anyone who is interested in the Jacksonville area, I have 3 Barr Plymouth Rock Roosters who need new homes. I ended up getting four roosters from my straight run and that is just WAY too many. They are about 10 weeks old now and I am selling them for about 10$ a piece. Here are two of them...
Themoores: I found your silkies today! I was getting a few more females from a nice man in Pink Hills and he has 5 silkies left. They seem to be juveniles. He has some whites and blues if I recall correctly. At any rate, I thought you would like to know so you can hurry and scoop them up if...
According to the paper they gave me, it's at 8am to 1 pm. Their chicks arrive on march 31st at the feed store. You should call them to see if they will special order.
I have been told so many different ways to sex these barr rocks, but I am just not getting it at all. I can't really see a color difference in any of them. Their wing feathers are coming in, two look solid black thus far while the others are striped. Three seem to have dark feet, three have...
Thank you! I am so thrilled. After reading up a little more, I decided to go with Barr Rock. I have six bitties in a bathtub just living it up. I have no idea how many cockerels or pullets I have, so I guess time will tell. I have been reading up on them and better eyes than mine could probably...
Chick05: I have never had a need to lime out here, maybe your soil is a bit different but I say this so that you know to test and see. Id hate for you to waste money.. The ground is so rich that all I have ever done is manure and landscape fabric. I put mulch on top just to keep the darned...
Silkies are rare out here. Once your roo gets his romance on, you could have quite a little market. I saw some on lejeuneyardsales not long ago and as fast as they were up, they were gone. It seems like all things chickens go fast there.
I do an extensive garden each year as well. This year I am trying to utilize my privacy fences and grow my vines (cucumber, pumpkin, squash, strawberries, etc) vertically. I can extensively in the summer and last year I had a small 12 x 12 garden and was still able to get enough veggies to can...
Try Fancy Feather Farms for the silkies or any other bird. I can't be sure she has them, but she does carry quite a few fancy breeds as well as the usual.

The vines wont come in until about April, so until then I will add shade and protection from the rain with tarps. I am also beginning a heat treated vertical pallet garden with leafy greens that I will attach to the far end for some snacks as they please. Pallets are free and I have a boat load...
Here is the front view. I have the chicken wire stapled into the long beams at the bottom which should make it difficult to lift. I am also going to secure those beams to the posts for further security.
Here is the inside view. I will be adding a hinged door here that will connect to my coop...
Well... My husband and I are really into the idea of becoming more self sufficient, but this is really my project and my husband is just smiling and nodding for the most part. I have done some research and I originally wanted New Hampshire Reds, but the breeder that I found has none currently...
