well, I at first I thought "maybe that's just what it smells like3" so grabbed the bag I had just emptied and stuck my head in for a big whiff...it smelled sweet and grainy, even though it was a bag I'd had open for about a week before I used it up all the way.
I wish I could package this...
I just opened two bags from the local feed store...and oh my god...you'd never smelled anything so rank.
There's definitely a huge difference between damp feed going bad and making sour mash (fermented feed as we know it to be)
here's a FAQ that answers your questions. The benefits are far too numerous to sit and type them all out here lol.

chickens are great garbage disposals!
It's definitely much easier to make dinner and go shopping with just two people...whenever we have "the kids" to finish off what we don't eat or stays in the fridge for just a bit too long lol.
Here's what mine had today. Got a double yolker yesterday and today.
This is egg, tomato sauce and bread. If I'm eating it I add cheeeese. If u had any vegetables, that would have been in there too...
I tried cabbage for the first time yesterday, at first they just wanted to rip it apart, but after my persistence they finally started eating it. It was red cabbage, and now everyone (especially the ducks) has bright teal poop.
I find the fermented feed far less time consuming than the dry feed.
They waste less so I'm not refilling all the time.
I almost gave up on chickens when I was feeding dry, and thought "I'm not going to ferment that's too much work" so I've been there lol.
fermented feed is a fantastic alternative to increase probiotics and other health benefits as well as reducing coat/waste.

maybe a tiny bit every once Ina blue moon...like a chicken birthday or something? But you really want to stay away from refined sugars on a regular basis.
