Do any of you filter the compost before putting it in the garden? I've got some left over hardware cloth (1/2" or so in size) that I was thinking of using to make a shaker box so that I could filter out any large particles (bones, sticks, animal skulls) out of the compost and also break the soil...

We made the mistake of buying a beautiful SS bin for the kitchen that has the charcoal filters in it. Huge mistake. The charcoal filters hold whatever little smells are in there and compound them over time so that once every couple of months I open it up and almost yak in the sink. The crazy...

Hmmm.... I don't think mine counts but I built a BSF bin to help attract the little guys/girls so that they can make feed for our chickens. We do want a bee hive one day though and I know that they'll help with the pollination and things.

Went and checked the bin last night and stirred it a bit. It's warmer than it has been and has a nice smell of damp earth so I know something is happening in there. I did find a small nest of fire ants in there though so I'll have to put something in there to get rid of that little mess.

Well there is no way in heck that the wife will let me put any kind of soil in the oven. That sort of thing ranks right up there with asking to save the days production of secret ingredient in a gallon jug for application later.
