Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

We’ve had folks use it for ducklings. They've said that ducklings don’t seem to need as much heat as chicks, and with their longer necks you’ll have to fine-tune the height adjustments more as they grow. But it should be doable.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I just pull it. As has been said, it’s not the heat they want but the security and its a habit. The longest I’ve ever left it was 5 weeks, but even then the heat was turned off.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

There’s a lot of conventional wisdom that makes no sense. No treats until they’re 12 weeks old. Don’t take them outside until temps are in the 80s. Don’t integrate until they already the same size as the adults. Feed according to the ages in the back of the feed bags. Don’t move them out to the...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Congratulations!!! My friend @LazyGardener used to say that chicks hatch and start looking for ways to kill themselves. This time of year they won’t need much heat for long, Mine have been off for sometime now, and the youngest were 2.5 weeks, the oldest 4.5 weeks when MHP came out. They’re...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Yep. The way they congregate around the “water cooler”, jostling for a spot the second they see one over there getting a drink, I always know that a few will start hitting the horizontals when they get crowded out away from the verticals. Then it’s just a matter of switching them out. There are...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

TNow that they are successfully using the vertical nipples, tomorrow we’ll put in the waterer with horizontal nipples and see how they do.

I’ll tell him, Bruce. And I tell him you said so! :lau I’m going out right now to hang up a better waterer. Hoping to get some good chick pics.

:lau I guess when you say it that way, yep! To me the order is the original batch and Ken’s Brahmas are the interlopers! ;)

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

:lau Nope, these were the 8 we’d originally ordered. But they didn’t have our Brahmas that we wanted, so when Ken found out last week that a feed store down in Cody had Brahmas, he just had to “go look”. Yeah, let’s drive 50 miles one way to “go look”. :he He ended up buying four, 2 Lights and 2...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

So I called My PetChicken yesterday, forgetting the time change of course, so I had to leave a message. My chicks were due to hatch and be shipped on Monday, but I never received an E-Mail saying they were on their way. In 8 years of dealing with MPC, that’s never happened before, so I left a...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

She may just be a bit insecure. As we all know, even chicks and chickens have distinct personalities and she’s showing hers! Just keep on keeping on. At 3 weeks they don’t all fit under a broody hen either, so get them weaned off the heat. Her feathering should catch up once she doesn’t have...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Thanks. I really didn’t want to do this again….I was rather enjoying being free of all the chicken work, although I did miss the fresh eggs. Oh, well. In for a penny, for a pound. Last night was their first night in the dark. There’s always that concern that they may wander away from MHP as...
