You buy scratch n peck too? I think it's great food. Why do you say I buy sprouts? I sprout them on the windowsill. I do soak food sometimes overnight, but dry food works better for us, especially when we go on vacation and neighbors watch the birds. I hear fermentation buckets can get mold or...
If it were me, (and you are way more "by-the-book" than I am, I'd split the difference before you go to bed and add a little more humidity. I'd rather protect the pip than have one get sticky.
I'm also not near as dedicated on feeding, although I do buy no-corn, no-soy, non GMO feed, plus...
So sorry to hear that! So sad.
Enjoy your new little ones.
Adorable chicks! Congratulations
Good luck on your hatch! What kind of bator do you have - will the paper towel on top of the mesh impede airflow?
Not quite - he never has the S curve in the neck. It'a almost like he stands straight up like a game bird but with his chin up - a straight line up from floor to beak, then loses balance/tips backward and "runs" backwards until he bumps into the wall. Yesterday morning he wouldn't bend...
Thanks Amy, good to know. All of the pictures I've seen of wry neck had the head down, down and twisted to the side, or twisted over the back. This goofy chick had it's beak straight up to the ceiling.
I'll keep an eye on it and pick up some vitamin E and Selenium tomorrow if he starts...
Definitely was fun to share this with others!
Too bad about your SFH, would have been nice to get one or two. Hooray for the Isbar, and all your other numbers look good!
I don't really know. His head wasn't twisted at all, he would just look up at the ceiling. It was cute/funny/sad that he didn't want to duck under the brooder plate, so would turn around and go in backwards. I had read about "star gazing" which could be caused by a neurological problem OR by...
I had one chick that couldn't stand well, and mainly walked backwards until it fell. Kept looking up, too.
In a shot glass I put half a boiled egg yolk, a pinch of electrolyte powder and a squirt of honey with enough water to make it runny. Every two hours I gave him a dose with an eye dropper...
Sorry about the chick you lost last hatch and thanks for sharing the lesson. I had 3 more eggs that seemed to have died during lockdown and I pulled the incubator plug just now at day 23. I didn't eggtopsy since there's no way to determine if shipping was a factor. (Shipped eggs die more often...
They are so cute! Congratulations on a great hatch!
Hope you have a great hatch as well - let us know how it goes! I assisted one of the Ameraucana and am wondering if I shouldn't have, although it was the only surviving egg from a pricey half-dozen.. It was huge, and now seems to have...
That's Great Altair! I've got a much smaller hatch since shipping did some real damage to my bunch.
So far I have 2 Russian Orloff and 1 Wheaten Ameraucana out, one more Ameraucana pipped. Snuck a quick peek and 2 more eggs have movement inside, the other 2 look like they have quit. Cleaned...
I have to say that buying the humidity pump was a great investment for me. Being in a high desert, I don't think I could have kept up without it.
Two chicks are out, had to assist the Ameraucana a little bit to finish the last quarter of the zip. It ended up with a string of stuff attached to...
Nicely said SC.
I'm a touch more confident opening the bator during lockdown since my Brinsea recovers humidity so fast. When I reached in to turn an egg slightly, it was back up to 70% in under a minute.
I see pips in one of my Orloff eggs. So excited!
