Today the last of the snow melted out of the shadow of the house. Everything is wet, but no longer frozen. We're forecast to have a few more freezing nights and then up to the 50's and 60's for daytime highs next week. I'll be able to plant my peas Friday, I think.

Been there, done that. We're on satellite internet and it's not always reliable.

It was supposed to be 18F this morning (DH got me the batteries for the new thermostat sensors and I'll be putting them up as soon as the snow melts). They're fine. Crowding all around my feet this morning complaining that the water wasn't there when they got off the roost. I did notice that...

I brought the waterers in tonight. I found 4 chickens trying to sleep in the same nestbox -- 2 cockerels and 2 pullets. The flock is only occupying about 3/4 of the usual space on the roosts because they're snuggled up tight.

Our church is cancelling early services because the entire county -- if not the entire eastern half of the state -- is going to be a solid sheet of ice.

Same. We *could* drive for an EMERGENCY. But being almost out of decaf isn't an emergency.

I'm from the other side of the city -- the mill towns downriver. Dad was in the Sewickley rural routes and Mom was in Leetsdale. I am a bigger Nascar fan than football fan, but when I watch football (rarely, we don't have TV), I root for the Steelers. :D The fluffy stuff is better than ice...

I look at the overnight forecast in the evening before I go down to shut them up in order to decide if I should bring the water in. Yesterday I never opened up because I know I wasn't going to want to go out there in the dark in the mess to close it.

I get something like this maybe twice in 5 years. My heavy work jacket is a man's jacket so I can't zip it. Normally just fine with my fleece vest under it. It's not worth the money to buy a work jacket that fits and zips instead of my yard-sale special when I only *need* to zip it a dozen...

It would have been nothing if I still lived in the north. But that road would have been plowed, salted, and sanded. My town actually had a plow truck run off the road and flip last night.

Just now DH had the hard part -- thawing and refilling the frozen waterers. I hauled them and went back to refill feeders while he dealt with the ice.
