I just moved my final baby under the heat lamp! 4 out of 12 for me. 6 made it to hatch, but 2 died while hatching. I am in love with all of these ducklings:love
I candled them for the last time before hatch. I haven't candled since about a week ago, so I've got six quitters. The other six have all pipped internally and should be out tomorrow!
I've got two or three that look far less developed than a lot of the other eggs, but I saw definite movement in all of them. They're at the back of the incubator, so I think that maybe they've just been a bit colder than the rest and might hatch later.
I got some Guineas two years ago. Most adorable chicks I've ever seen. Raised them in the house and handled them a lot, just like with my other birds. Five acres of land, yet they never went more than thirty feet from my house. They flew up onto the roof all day, tried to lay eggs up there (once...
Temp and humidity are pretty much the same. Duck eggs are really robust, so you shouldn't have many issues. I just kind of wing it each year and I have great hatch rates. The only thing that really comes to mind is that duck eggs need very good air circulation, and you should open the incubator...
I usually turn the turner off for lockdown, but leave them with the air cell facing up in the trays until they start to pip. When they start pipping, I just remove the trays and sit them on their sides on the bottom of the incubator for hatch.
I like to put them all together so that they're touching, but it honestly doesn't matter. Opening the incubator at this point isn't a big deal, so it's up to you.
I posted about this a few days ago https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/11th-annual-easter-hatch-a-long-2020.1350863/post-22380700
I haven't incubated any Marans eggs before, but that's my best guess.
When they start to externally pip, I take the trays out and put them on their sides. I like to put the eggs up against each other because the movement of the other eggs hatching helps & encourages the others to hatch.
I should sell all of the drakes that hatch out and keep all the duckhens since I have WAY too many drakes, but I'll probably keep all of them because I get too attached to ducklings.
I haven't candled Maran eggs before, but I'd assume that you should candle them with a very bright light in a pitch black room. If that doesn't get you anything, then you probably just gotta space out the eggs and hope for the best. If they're spaced, then there's less of a chance of dead eggs...
Same here! Turning on day 13, all 12 are fertile and alive. I wasn't expecting 12 ducklings, but I'm not complaining.
Last year, I set 16 chicken eggs and 15 hatched. I'm on a pretty good streak!
