Well, I'm happy to report that my gaggle of chicks survived the deep-freeze in their brooder that is in my unheated coop. I was ready to move them into the house, but every time I would sneak in to check, they were running the full brooder, happy as clams!
On the flip-side of that I let my...
I'm so disappointed- my 12.17 hatch out of three eggs I had one hatch normally and is doing great, one with a malpositioned pip that drowned, and the third hatched but didn't absorb the yolk at all? I'd never seen anything like this. I cut the dried yolk off yesterday and hoped for the best...
Well, four Cuckoo silkies joining four Splash make 8 in the brooder this week! Looks like the cuckoo are one black, one Chocolate, and two potentially mauve. Unfortunately the chocolate is a cull for toes, so will be joining my egg flock rather than my breeding flock.
Next hatch is three Splash...
An update on my six shipped eggs - three out of six have hatched, with a fourth expected to hatch (currently internally pipped). The fifth did pip but was malpositioned and the chick died before I could intervene, and the sixth was an obvious late-quitter. It looks like I'll wind up with two...
Alrighty! So my first batch of the month has hatched yesterday, four splash silkies!
The six shipped eggs are day 20 and moved over to the hatcher today, with two internal pips. Honestly, if I get three out of the hatched eggs I'll be pretty happy, and if I got all six I'll be over the moon...
So I've made my culls for my shipped-eggs batch - five out of 16 developing, with a sixth egg I'm keeping for a few more days because I see veining, but no embryo. It's a dark egg though, so I don't mind waiting a few more days.
I'm definitely putting in a damage claim with USPS though....
I...
Day 5 for my home-bred Silkie batch, 7 out of 8 are fertile, which is amazing because I only reintroduced a rooster to the Splash girls the day before I started collecting eggs! Day 3 for the 16 shipped eggs, and there are 3 I feel comfortable saying are developing so far, but I'm not doing an...
I swear I was going to turn my incubators off until March, but here I am with 8 of my own breeding blue/splash Silkie eggs, and 16 shipped cuckoo Silkie eggs (and was that shipping process a saga - USPS "lost" them for two days), due to hatch 12.10 and 12.12 respectively. Aaaaaaand I'll probably...
