How do we manage to get into these situations? Collected another "Slightly Damaged Stray"...

This absolutely blows my mind. I mean, to my eye, Gus was still a little underweight when he went to the trainer. How the guy could think it was OK to let the horse get into this condition is beyond me. How he could think it would be OK with you to let the horse get into this condition - that I...

How do we manage to get into these situations? Collected another "Slightly Damaged Stray"...

Gus is in northern Mississippi. With all that has happened on this thread, perhaps the narrative has gotten a little confusing. The "home" that Em recently mentioned is the same one that it was at the beginning of the thread, Terry's place in Glen, Mississippi. At about the same time as Gus went...

x2 Hindsight is always 20/20, Em. You have done what many, many other horse owners have done - trusted someone without really checking up on them. It's a painful lesson, and I know it bites even harder because of where Gus has been so recently. I'm sorry for all of you.

OK, now you are scaring me. When I read this, and I thought about Lilly, my blood ran cold. You know that you are going to have to continue to deal with these issues when Gus comes back to you, right? He has spent a few weeks with somebody who won't take mess, and he won't be coming back to...

How do we manage to get into these situations? Collected another "Slightly Damaged Stray"...

This would explain so much of what you have seen with Gus. I'm thinking that his early life was most likely much the same as the life of most young horses; he was probably stabled and groomed and given the basic training and socialization that is typically done with young horses. But I'm...

How do we manage to get into these situations? Collected another "Slightly Damaged Stray"...

Sending Gus to a trainer may be traumatic for you, Em, but it's the best thing you can do for Gus. While it may be amusing to say that you have a stubborn brat for a horse, a stubborn brat is a liability, both for you and for himself. With good care and a little luck, this animal may live...

If you only knew how many rabbits I've kept because DD "claimed" them.

I know it sounds heartless, but the Vet probably didn't give Gus pain meds at first because he knows that a hurting horse is more likely to stand still, and not feel frisky enough to start bouncing around and damage himself. "Stall rest" is actually very stressful for a horse; some really high...

How do we manage to get into these situations? Collected another "Slightly Damaged Stray"...

When I saw this post, I had to smile in spite of the horse's condition. A white horse for a white knight - how perfect is that? OK, so he's not white yet, but being a genetic gray, in about 5 years, he will be. I'm kind of surprised that the Vet didn't prescribe the twice-daily hosings from...
