Crossbreeding dual purpose breeds for sustainable flock

I had a mongoose problem, they were eating my 1 month old chicks, so I bought this trap and got rid of them. I have also caught a lot of rats with this trap, but they still around. At least I got rid of the mongoose in my area. I use raw chicken meat for the mongoose and chicken feed for the...

Crossbreeding dual purpose breeds for sustainable flock

I just read a step by step article on breeding broiler chickens and the main point was to control how much they eat to prevent the hens from developing to much fat around their ovary ducts. They recommend once a day feeding. I have a hard time doing this because feeding makes my chicken happy...

Breese chickens cross well with Cornish X. I am in the process of phasing out my pure Breese line and replacing it with this cross. I kept 2 roosters, one of them has yellow legs and the other one has white legs. I processed 2 other roosters at 3 1/2 months and they blew away my Breese. They...

However, I think that pairing need to be crossed with a fast growing chicken like a Red Ranger or Cornish x............I am currently crossing a Bresse rooster with a white...

Crossbreeding dual purpose breeds for sustainable flock

I find it harder to process scrawny birds, than Cornish cross. I also found out that I could use a one inch spaced scoop net to catch my wild heritage chickens in the holding coop during the day, sure beats trying to catch one with my hands.

Crossbreeding dual purpose breeds for sustainable flock

I used 2 inch wide velcro wrap tape from ebay and cut it 7 inch long and cut it again down the middle into one inch strips for young roosters. I put it on snug and let them get used to it before I make the adjustment. I had two Breese roosters from a specific farm die from wearing them, this...

Crossbreeding dual purpose breeds for sustainable flock

I am doing an experiment on hybrid vigor with Bresse bred with other heritage birds. My two Dark Cornish chickens, now going on month four started crowing, so I had to catch them to put on a no crow collar. I live in a residential area and I don't want to make my neighbors upset. However, the...
