Thanks. She was from my White Cornish over a white EE. Naturally that cross is slower growing than the cross using white commercial broilers as the female line, but are heavier than they look. I just started saving eggs from two CX pullets under an F1 cockerel that is 1/2 CX himself; hoping this...

I always get a kick out of hatching chicks, though not so fond of raising chicks in our winters here. However, I'm developing a project line of meaty bodied, blue egg layers and want them to be decent winter layers, so am hatching chicks from a breeding pen of birds that are a cross of...

Blue tongue is a virus spread to ruminants primarily by the bite of midges, which do resemble mosquitoes but are smaller. Many folks around here call midges 'no-see-ums' due to their small size. Plague hatches of midges are more likely to occur under drought conditions, whereas mosquitoes thrive...

Thank you, and wishing you and everyone else a great year also. I have always been very happy with Schlechts. [It took guts not to change their family name. lol] They don't have vent sexed chicks available, but their prices are unbeatable and they're just plain nice folks over the...

I've thought about turkeys too. For those raising them in the northern 1/3 of the state, especially on prairie soil, have you experienced problems of blackhead disease when on ground shared with chickens?

Thank you. They're actually called Dark Cornish. In large fowl Cornish there are only 4 APA recognized colors: Dark, White Laced Red, Buff, and White. I have the Darks and Whites, and also the unrecognized colors of black and double blue laced red.

Thank you. The eggs aren't all this big, but this is an early egg from one of the first pullets to lay. They were early layers, and started right out laying mostly medium size eggs, and many are laying large eggs now at 6 months of age. Their CX mothers did a lot to increase egg size, and...

NN = Naked Neck chickens, some used to call them Turkens due to their non-feathered necks and large size, though there seem to be many smaller ones now.
