Sonoran's right about the inability to know what the boys are if you do leave the Black hens in there. You should leave them out for at least a couple of weeks and get a batch of eggs you KNOW will produce split and Choc boys. That's your fast track.
On the Silkieds, you should wait to work...
I now have gobs of splits, with Blues, Blacks, Mauves & Chocolates. I have Fluffy Blues & Blacks. I'm hoping to get Fluffy Chocolates & Mauves this hatch, since they started laying again a couple of weeks ago.
I'm going to split out the Splits from the Fluffies to REMOVE the Silkied from the...
Chicks are popping like movie theater popcorn!!! Ka-POW!!!
I'll get some shots in the morning, and post them, plus some shots of the Mauves from the last batch.
I've used both cardboard and styrofoam. I don't really notice a difference between the two, except in cases of extreme humidity and the cardboard turns soggy then...but it's really humid in here in the spring and fall and dry in the summer and winter with the heater/HVAC running. When we don't...
That's right, I totally forgot they were under a momma and that this is just for the hatch. Honestly, then, I would remove ALL of the water and the watch once the first one pips. If it gets out fine, the humidity should go up a lot...over the hatch, the first ones will provide humidity for the...
If your eggs look pretty close to where they should for the time frame, I'd let it ride. If they look small, I'd go ahead and make sure all the vent holes are open as wide as possible. I generally go by the size of the air cell, and if they are correct or close, I let it go. These seem to really...
Here's a cheesy video of my last hatch when I was transferring them to the brooder. The little guys were all standing still until they heard my voice, and it's hilarious to see them react!

I dry incubate, as well- it's sooooo humid here I find that even in forced air, it HAS to be that way.
It was brutal for a bit, and when I lost the last of my original stock I nearly quit the project. It was just soooooo hard! Nearly 20 original birds!
Almost all of my unexplained deaths...
Poor health has been a devastating factor, and we've lost a lot of good people from the project due to the heartbreak of losing all of the stock on which folks had worked so hard- and LOVED. It almost made me walk away, and sometimes I'm still unsure if I'll keep going because I'm too busy to...
There are some Swedish that have it, some South Americans that have it, some bantam Cochins spontaneously developed it (Bantam Barn- Steve Wheat has them!), and they appear in Ayam Cemani occasionally. I know there are also Seramas with it. I'm sure there are more, but those are all I know of...
Hola, everyone!
I know I wasn't so cheerful this winter when I was having losses.
I now am down to one Blue Silkied hen and have 2 dozen that may or may not be carrying. Of these, I have mostly Blue, a few Black, and a few Splash...the exciting ones are the Chocolate (sex-liked). I know the...
Awesome! Post that on my Facebook page for wide distribution- the link is in my signature.
I have an auction up for B/B/S/Mauve/Chocolate split-to-fuzzy Ameraucana Project- ends this time tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb 26th.
I'm still going on the Chocolates. On my Blacks I'm now getting Reds and odd red leakage at any given body part, male or female...very annoying.
I should see my first fluffy chocolate this summer. Unfortunately I'm burnt out on incubating, well, brooding, really (thousands of chicks in winter...
Julie, I'll send you a 3rd gen improved split rooster! This boy taken to your girls will give you a much healthier flock. Heck....I've got them coming out my ears- I could send you 5!!
All roos, all the time!!
I know it's a very long thread, but the whole story is there. No OUT-crossing was done to other breeds, but there has be LINE-crossing to other Ameraucanas for years now to fix the genetic bottleneck that likely caused this mutation and the weakness the variety clearly has displayed.
We've...
