Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@casportpony Thanks for mentioning. I don't feel that it's a strong possibility. They were eating fermented whole grain food and mid way through the trouble I switched them to pellets because it seemed like a lot was being wasted with the whole grains and fines, and I didn't want them lacking...

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

Mine do. Not sure if it's just like chickens, but they dig around with their beaks looking for food and make little nests for themselves by pushing the straw around.

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

Sprinkled throughout the straw in their night area and run, and occasionally on the sand as well. Seems like it usually sunk to the bottom of the floor, but I ended up scooping out quite a bit when I took out all the straw. I've been sprinkling it for four months!

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

I'm not really sure. She seems about the same as when I started!

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@Miss Lydia Exactly. I'm not even sure how long it would take to see an improvement in her skin after being exposed to it for four months. Still hoping it makes a difference!

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

Lots of people use it with good results. If you haven't already noticed problems, it's probably okay. I would just make sure it's on the base of your floor and not sprinkled throughout the straw, or whatever they lay on.

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@DuckyDonna I've scoured the internet to see if anyone's had problems with PDZ. The most I've come up with is a horse who may have died after ingesting it. I felt like I had to be careful handling it when sprinkling it in ducks pen because if you inhale any of the dust it's uncomfortable. I...

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@Miss Lydia - the other change I made right before I noticed Penny's skin problem was oyster shells. Previously I had only bought a small bag of organic oyster shell flakes. It was really expensive, and when I went up to Tractor Supply (which is kind of far from me) I got a huge bag or cheap...

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@Miss Lydia :p She's doing alright! She definitely still has her scabby areas on both sides. I looked at them yesterday and one scab seemed active (a drop of blood on it). But she's not worse by any means! She has a new type of straw and I took the PDZ out. She also hasn't swam in our well water...

@Ratchnick, I'll keep that in mind - thanks!

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@Miss Lydia - I just did a search on my conversations here and the Sweet PDZ was recommended on Oct 1. I first posted about Penny's shoulder injury on Oct. 7. Could this be a possibility? I don't know, but I'm going to clean every bit of straw and PDZ out of my coop this morning and start fresh...

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@Miss Lydia - I did consider the Sweet PDZ but I don't think I started using it until after this started, but I will try to look back at my conversations here and when it was recommended to me see for sure. The thing with the PDZ is it seems to land down in the bottom of the straw for the most...

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@Miss Lydia - what do you prefer for bedding? I do fluff my straw everyday and add a little fresh on top, plus the Sweet PDZ, as I don't want them lying in poop either! But I'm hauling out copious amounts each week and replacing it with fresh, but the straw is mounding up in my dump spot, and if...

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

Sorry guys, this is a long and boring post without a dramatic conclusion, but if you're curious about Penny's biopsy results, or have any thoughts for me about what I could look at as far as possible environmental causes, read on. Yesterday we received the results of Penny's biopsy. No cancer...

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

Thanks, I will look for a better one. You're saying that it's fine to use a human grade one?

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@CatWhisperer It says Lactic Acid Bacteria 8.5 million CFU: Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacilius acidophilus, L plantarum, L casei Does that tell you anything? I'm not familiar enough with probiotics to understand the label.

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@CatWhisperer - the probiotic I have is by Duravet and it's just called Probiotics Daily for poultry. How do I know if this is a decent one? Thanks!

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@CatWhisper - Thanks, well at least there are other issues that the biopsy could reveal. I did start the ducks on a probiotic a few days ago, but was wondering if I should continue that leading up to the biopsy, or if it could at all interfere with the results? Doc said she should be off the...

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

I finally was able to talk to the vet just now. We're going to go ahead and do the biopsy Wednesday. He said results could come back inconclusive, or just indicating heavy bacteria, and then we'll kind of still be where we are. Or it could come back and say resistant fungal, or a rare disease...

Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@castportpony I detailed her first two antibiotics in older posts, can't remember at this point, but the 3rd one was sulfamethox for a month, via syringe, then most recently she was on tylan powder for ten days and three weeks of clavacillin (pill), terbinafine hydrochloride(pill), and...
