Anyone do a skin biopsy on their duck?

@Miss Lydia - I did consider the Sweet PDZ but I don't think I started using it until after this started, but I will try to look back at my conversations here and when it was recommended to me see for sure. The thing with the PDZ is it seems to land down in the bottom of the straw for the most part. But I'm going to try to figure it out right now as to when I first bought it.

It's worth checking into, because if she has a problem with it even a small contact could set off a reaction. Grasping at straws here.

I prefer shavings but don't use it if the vet says not too. Have you thought maybe the sweet PDZ might be the culprit? I use it too but she could have a problem with it. I use deep shavings and scoop all the wet poop out daily then turn the bedding and add new about every 2 weeks. I keep it deep.

I use hay but every morning I take out all the poop pancakes so they have nice clean dry hay every night. For some reason, my ducks rarely go back into their pen during the day even in bad weather so once I clean it out it stays clean for the night time.

I've been using hay for 3 years and I guess that cleaning out every day like I do helps and I've never had any problems using it. Plus it's free!

@Miss Lydia - I just did a search on my conversations here and the Sweet PDZ was recommended on Oct 1. I first posted about Penny's shoulder injury on Oct. 7. Could this be a possibility? I don't know, but I'm going to clean every bit of straw and PDZ out of my coop this morning and start fresh to see. That would be so weird!

It would be but you just never know. And defiantly worth a try. It would be awesome if it was.

Alternative beddings include peat moss and wood pellet stove pellets, shredded leaves. If you want to try something that is not straw or wood chips.

How about sawdust? Or would that be an ingestion hazard? You could try stall bedding pellets (for horses,) but that breaks down into sawdust-like texture, too, when it gets wet ... and we all know how nice and dry ducks stay!

I know some people use saw dust. Its all about using what you can get at a reasonable price.
