    You have the best chance to see something if it's dark when you candle, although that means disturbing the sleeping hen. The eggs shouldn't be getting dirty, because the broody does not poop while she's on the nest.

    Let her do her thing. She's better at it. Are they light or dark colored eggs? Because with dark colored eggs you may not see veins but with a bright light you may be able to see movement.

    Keep in mind too that if they have access, other hens will try to lay eggs in her nest which could break some. Mark the fertilized eggs with a sharpie and the date so you can tell them apart.
