    Free ranging pros and cons?

many yrs ago, i would ferment whole oats. but do you ferment the crumbles too? or am i misreading your post? ive never tried that. i now adays, pour water over their ration of crumbles and pellets. this is in the outside feed troughs. they also have dry crumbles in their interior self...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

this reminds me of a story i read from someone many yrs ago. the discussion was on crooked keel bones. this individual, claimed he never had a problem with crooked keel bones in his fowl, till the state came through spraying weeds. the poison they sprayed caused that generation of fowl to...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

if you go by UNDERSTANDING, you will follow and believe every little thing read in print. much of whats in print is by scientific study that is done on a very small scale basis, in a controled environment, with one certain breed, etc, etc. anotherwords, not real life. even worse.......the...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

yes very odd. ive never seen a chicken that didnt like corn. id say you have raised yours to be this way, in an essence spoiled them. (not a bad thing in some regards) if raised on scratch which is truly garbage anyway, they will not prefer whole corn. but yours not liking corn is not a big...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

I have also found this to be the case. Two different times with two different strains of fowl. One was the ISA BROWNS,And the second is the TETRA TINTS. Both free ranging. But I feel it's genetic/environmental. I have other strains also ranging with no issues. So obviously these particular...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

There is an issue of health when it comes to contained fowl. This is where extra work and time comes into play. Mental health is an issue. If left contained full time. Especially if on an individual basis, the fowl can become what we call pen stale. So u must keep them mentally stimulated...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

Something else I disagree with is the advice to get a rooster to protect the hens from predators. I personally have never seen this to be the case. I don't believe any true-predator will be stopped by a rooster. I had a game rooster few yrs back fight a hawk through the pen wire. His head and...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

Production is generally better when contained. I feel it's because nutrition is better when contained as explained above. Plus the fowl are more focused. Not off running here and there and/or stressed from environmental influences which is always present when ranging. Those that feel their...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

Another misconception that seems to be parroted by the masses , is the taboo of feeding layer ration to chicks. I've raised many many many over the years feeding layer crumbles. Now I must say this isn't my preferred method, but at times a few will hatch unplanned or only a few hatch and I...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

The more experience I get the less I lean on nor agree with scientific studies. I follow true life experience much more than I follow so called studies or what I read in print. Everything I'm about to say is based on the assumption one is feeding a quality ration. And the only way to know...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

Great observation and deduction TN. You are correct in your findings. This is just one reason why cooped up fowl can have better nutrition than free ranged. We must never make the assumption that "all natural" is more healthier. In some instances the opposite has proven true. More later.

    Free ranging pros and cons?

Now THIS is what I'm talking about.......someone who thinks outside the box. Not stuck on what science and everyone else just parrots. Some good points brought up LAZY. Real life experience and actual time spent with fowl will show a lot of what is written in books and sites like this is...
  13. Dead Rabbit

    Free ranging pros and cons?

One can accomplish all the "pros" to free ranging while keeping them contained PLUS having them live a potential longer life AND not put up with the other "cons" that come with ranging fowl......one just has to think outside the box, work a tad harder, not attribute human emotions to fowl and...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

Nutritionally speaking, it's a healthier bird from a physical standpoint to contain them. And it's not that difficult to keep them mentally stimulated while penned too.
