Ya know, that could be true. It looks like the size of a bite. We test drove a saddle on her about 5 days ago (took it off immediately because the rooster lost his mind when he saw the predator eyes on it), but I can't imagine that wound she has today was there and we just missed it. So you're...
Thank you for that link. We plan on increasing the flock, but figured I wouldn't need saddles after we get rid of this young rooster. But now I see they can be used for other things - keeping hens warm or covered when feathers are missing or clean when there's a wound.
Ah, yep. I see how that could happen. Thank you.
Moving forward without the rooster, the plan is to limit the free range time because of the fox threat. Noon to late afternoon at least. We saw the fox in the morning so.. that probably means nothing but it's all I've got for clues for now...
Yeah, that was realized shortly after too. If she won't do the trade, she said she would originally but things change, then we'll have our first roo dinner for sure. :( It's still kind of hard to get a grip on it all going this way, but that's the reality of it.
I keep hearing about people making their own. I wanted to ask someone who has used them before, how long do you leave it on? All day and then take it off before bed? Or do you leave them on for days?
Thank you for that! That was a serious healing on the bird in that link. If anything, I feel more confident and assured there are ways to come back from those kinds of injuries. I have come to the realization that we're going to trade the roo for hens. We didn't need him for our egg flock to...
MAJOR ISSUE NOW! :(
My Sweetie has an injury. Two days ago a fox was in the yard. All the birds seemed OK. But today I found a major injury under one of Sweetie's wings. I think this is from the rooster's aggressive behavior with her, but not 100%. Is this something she can come back from?
Yeah, that's what I'm hearing more and more - about the 10 to 1 ratio. We're going to to do that - get more hens. I'm hoping he will calm down. Fingers crossed! Thank you :)
UPDATE: So I got the Hen Saver I mentioned above with the eyes on it to keep the hawks away and to protect Sweetie's back until the feathers grow back. I managed to get this photo before I had to take it off and ordered another with no eyes. The rooster thinks she's the enemy with that on! He...
Yep, that's where my little Sweetie's back is going to be like if I don't do something. I think that's what I'm going to do, at least for this first year to see if he settles down in the fall. Fingers (and feathers) crossed! Thank you :)
Oh that's not my chicken, it's just an example of a hen wearing that Hen Saver product I'm considering getting to protect my girl in question. I just updated the post to be more clear. Sorry about that. :)
The chickies have been coming out for the day since last week. We held off as long as...
Hello! I've been reading posts in this forum for the last year since we got our hens. It's proven to be quite helpful and set my mind at ease many times. So I'm signing up to see what advise I can get for my flock's specific issue. We have these hens for eggs only, there's no plan to use them...
