some might, and some might not. I will say that my GSHP watched the sky, unlike breeds that aren't bird dogs. So did our Chessies. They watched the jets flying far overhead too!
Beyond that, it's about training, first to not injure the chickens, and then to look out for threats. most dogs...
Border Collies are super smart, true, and beyond energetic. They need gainful employment, and serious daily exercise, or you will be driven crazy. A bored BC will find things to do, not good.
Having a farm and sheep would be good...

Our GSHP was the smartest and most independent dog we've ever had! Fortunately I'm also a stubborn German, so persistence did pay off, and he was terrific! One of our all time favorites, sadly missed.
Also a perpetual motion machine, so likely we won't ever have another.

Having him crate trained is useful for his lifetime, and that crate should be a safe, pleasant place, including at bed time. Many puppies can't have the freedom of the house for a year or two, and for some dogs, never, when there's nobody at home.
And it's easy for most dogs to get out of a...
It's best to start any new dog as you mean to go on, for the next fifteen years. That crate would be best in the bedroom where he's going to be sleeping, so he's used to it from the start, even if it means two crates for a while.

Males will be bigger, so if they wanted smaller, they needed to order one of the females.
We like large too!
Our two dogs who matured at 80 pounds, weighed 20 pounds at eight weeks, and slightly over 30 pounds at twelve weeks. One was a Chessie, the other a GSHP.
Your puppy isn't really huge in...
No pink, it doesn't go with his golden coat. The blue splash tie on the bottom row is my favorite, but no bow ties for me!
And don't have him eat any of them...

The only dog I saw with the tennis ball jammed in his throat did live to get to the emergency clinic, and with sedation and a long reach, it came out. A German Shepard, who lived.
Eating tennis balls, whole or in sections, not rare.

One of our dogs didn't mind any of the repellant sprays; his thing was chewing furniture! Fortunately, most dogs will hate at least one of the flavors, so getting a couple of small bottles of different flavors at the pet store is worth it.

Currently we have two pit bull terriers, who will chew anything other than the big original nylabones up in no time. They get the very large size, and as they gradually sliver them to smaller sizes, we throw them out and get new. the tipping point is 'can she swallow it?' gone!
Our retrievers...
You can train your dog to potty in a specific area of your yard, by taking him out on leash every time. Our dogs almost always go in our spruce/ shrub border, not on the grass. Wonderful!

Good idea, get a few choices, and see how he does with them. a big issue will be what he plays with and leaves whole, and what he demolishes. Many dogs, ESPECIALLY retrievers, get to have abdominal surgery because they swallow toys, or pieces of toys. Just sayin'.
