Thanks, that is why I'm considering it. I've heard from so many that they will store more with an upper entrance. I think I'll give it a try next spring.

For those with upper entrances in the summer, do you just get honey in the super or do they store pollen there too? I use a QE in the summer, and am thinking about adding an upper entrance next summer.

I'm not usually a proponent of the "dummies" books, but Beekeeping for Dummies is very well laid out. I also have Hive Management, but IMO it's more for once you get started than for someone that hasn't done any beekeeping yet. I read it before I started with my hives, and some of it was a bit...

Beautiful picture. And yum for that honey.

muttsfan - nice pictures! Mine are going to have to duke it out, because I couldn't get to doing anything about my queen cells. I'll let you know how it goes, I could have a queen hatch as early as tomorrow. I did send you a PM with a link discussing this very issue. Too bad you don't have...

    I believe it's a Tree of Heaven.

Anyone know what kind of tree this is? They grow in clumps around here, and they are getting grape like flower clusters on them. It's a terrible picture that my son took while we were driving.

I would think your hive tool would be able to scrape them off the comb. I haven't done mine, not sure I'm going to be able to, as my weekend doesn't have an ounce of spare time in it and I'm coming up close to when one queen will hatch. (one could hatch as early as Monday)

Hard to tell. There could be fewer bees because there is no queen laying, so no new brood emerging. I have read of new packages swarming, but have not had it happen myself. How long ago was she released?

From what I've read, they don't normally make queen cells from laying workers. Could she have gotten accidentally squished on your last inspection? I'm still contemplating whether to thin my queen cells, but with 14, I think I'd definitely thin some. They say to keep the largest capped ones...

And you still have to tend to a hive. The flow part replaces the standard super, so you still have to take care of the bees. They can't live (meaning raise brood) in the flow frames, it's only for honey collection.

Another beekeeper mentioned Terro to me. I tried it and he was right, the bees don't bother it. Maybe not enough sugar content? Looks fine to me. Nice video.
