Oh, I'm so glad you brought that up Mortie, we have had some pretty cold nights and I didn't know how to tell if eggs were frozen. Thanks for the answers. It is definitely early for such cold temps. I'm in Oregon, but just talked to my Dad in Alabama and they are in the 20's at night there too...
I read everyday, but haven't posted in a while. Things are busy with kids in school, and just had new windows and doors installed. Had the two obnoxious Roos sent to freezer camp. They will make yummy dinners down the road. The girls are still producing slowly, out of 8, we have been getting 2-4...
I'm with you, except here it's a mini heat wave, but the EE's carry on, little laying machines. The 5 brown egg layers got some 'splainin to do!!
MC I think you're very funny!
Lol, I guess I hope that too, but it would be yummy for a little bit!
The funny thing was they seemed just as happy about the eggs as we were about the crab! We just moved in less than a year ago, so I'm thinking we are going to get along just fine!!
So last night a neighbor gave us some dungeoness crab (one of my favorite things ever) and I got all excited and gave them a dozen eggs as a thank you - which was almost all the eggs I've got at the moment. Today the we got 1. Sigh.
Hershy having a private moment
Junior... Still on rooster probation
Out of eight layers, only 2 lay green eggs. Brown layers need to step up their game. Lol
.
Back to school :thumbsup
Meet Scruffy, she has always been a little clumsy and her mop seemed to slow her down so she was the last to get on the roost, still seems to sleep on the coop floor now and then. She is 24 weeks like most of my hens and we've always called her "special". She was sooooooo skittish - until she...
Kinda like CA's ban on fruits and veggies from out of state. It's got great intent, but reality is a little different. Glad you don't live next to one of those commercial guys, it would be worrisome to think of them infecting your flock.
I think free necropsy is a good thing to offer, it could be so helpful in identifying contagious illness in backyard flocks. Not to say one should immediately go there for one isolated death. It's hard to know just the right answers, I would have done what you did in this instance, but it's hard...
Yeah!! I finally got a third egg. They are so far apart it's like getting my first egg every time, lol. This was from the EE who has been acting like she would lay any minute for the past week + .
We have been hearing a lot of "egg song" lately, but when I could identify the singer, it was my...
Oh, how horrible! Glad you had minimal losses. Do you have any idea whose dogs? I don't think it's ok for dogs to run free either. Hope it gets resolved without any more losses!
Thanks! Scramble I fully agree it is so hard to wait! Especially since we had a little tast of success recently, I guess the little brats were just messing with my emotions
Still no more eggs.
I have 2 BA's, 2 EE' and a polish all 23 weeks, I also have 3 BO's who are 18 weeks. I know these breeds aren't always early layers, but this is silly. They are on layer feed with oyster shell on the side. Plenty of water and a few treats. No signs of illness, normal looking...
Way not cool enough, those little cartons are so cute :D
Just kidding.
Still no eggs, I think I will eat all of these older chickens and just wait until spring when the babies should be more than old enough to lay. Why support the lazy butts through the winter.
