Going from memory of what the ones I will be getting look like.... yours look very much like what I remember. I really like the shape or type of your hens. I'm hoping I can get mine sometime in the next few weeks. I'll try to post pictures then, and maybe get some pointers. I'll try to find...
What do I know about them? Honestly, not much. I am one to do a lot of reading, and my Standard of Perfection is my bible in the chicken world. I'ts an old one, but still works for me. I recently joined the ABA, but haven't purchased the ABA standard yet. The is on the agenda.
When I get...
Personally I give my chicks that are with the broody mommas medicated chick starter. It may not be necessary, but it doesn't hurt the hen to eat some of it as long as you are not eating the eggs.
I agree with bantiesrule that the chicks raised by the broody are healthier. PLUS it's so much...
OH! I have a good friend who is looking for a ginger red cock or cockerell. It doesn't have to be show quality or condition. Just a good example of ginger red. If anyone knows of one that is within a reasonable distance from NE Kansas, send me a PM.
lethldragon-I wish I knew how to answer your question, but being able to tell the gender of chicks is something I still struggle with.
I just found out tonight I will be getting a trio and a pair of brown/red OE's. I'm excited. My sis has swept her local show with these birds about 3 times...
Another way to find folks is to look at the APA and ABA websites. They list some breeders and you can find master exhibiter etc that way. If you find someone in NC that breeds the varieties of OE's that you are looking for, then that would be a good way to start.
There is just no comparison...
CJarvis-Thanks! I think that sounds about like what I will do. I have some linoleum scraps, but not enough for the project, so I may have to scrounge up some more or find some other suitable material, free, if possible, to line the cages with. I was thinking instead of using wood to tack it...
Keeping mine all on the ground isn't an option right now, but what you say here certainly makes sense. I am wondering what you think of this idea. I recently purchased some stacking cages for some of my birds. Each pen is 30" x 42" and 33" high. Since they are built from 1" welded wire, I...
My SDOE's are a hoot! They are the most aggressive eaters I've ever owned. They throw their food EVERYWHERE!
The sweetest chicken I've ever had was an OEGB ginger red hen. My sister hatched her, and I ended up with her and no rooster to go with her. I recently gave her to a 7 year old girl...
From my experience with different breeds, the OEGBs are some of the BEST for young kids to start showing. I have had several different bantams (Mille Fleur d'uccle, cochins, rosecombs, OEGB's, seabrights, seramas and several others) I like the personality of the OEGB's the best of all my...
CJarvis-That is interesting. I have only had experience with one truly human aggressive rooster, and that was a bantam black cochin. He was the meanest thing! You couldn't open the door without him flying at you and hitting you. We hatched a number of chicks out of him and all of his...
Here is a picture of my SD cockerell. He's pretty young here, and I apologize for the poor quality of the picture. I don't think I could take a decent picture of a chicken to save my soul. Anyway, I think this guy is pretty nice. Maybe not as nice as some of Jarvis's beautiful birds, but I...
