    A chicken rookie's coop project...

OK...this is probably my last post in this thread unless someone sees something I should address. The photos below show the waterer and feeder hanging up and the doors finished and stained and fresh pine shavings in the coop. I'd like to thank everyone here for your ideas and suggestions and...

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

OK...2 last photos before the coop is occupied. We have 4 pullets that will become part of the managerie Sunday. The doors are now installed and stained and there's fresh bermuda hay in the coop (just not in these photos). There will be a feeder and waterer handing under the covered part...

Quote: Good idea...I'll have the tractor out Thursday to skim some turf where potatoes are going next year and I'll use that to build it up.

Quote: I didn't notice the goose decoy until after I took that picture. One of my prankster family members put that in there.

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

The project continues. Honestly, all that's left now is a little painting of the trim and the construction of 2 small doors. The 1/2 roof - 1/2 wire top is now complete. I did that so they'd have some shelter from the rain other than just inside the coop and also some sunny area. All of the...

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

OK....we're back on the chicken coop project. Other things took presidence but we're finally back to work. Here's the primer coat of paint on the coop...right about now, I'm sure my neighbors were getting worried about the pink.... Now for the real color to match the barn.... I've got a set...

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

Quote: OK....that makes perfect sense...thank you. If you look back at my photos, my coop has two kind of triangular shaped openings on either side at the very top of the coop. In addition to that, there's a big access door that will be right behind their roosts with hardware wire covering...

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

Another day of work completed...all of the staining is done on the surfaces that will be exposed and under the hardware cloth..... There's a roof on the coop part and hardware cloth is installed on the front half of the run. The saga continues!!! Oh yeah...the unstained part will be painted...

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

Originally....no. The hardware wire was just going to enclose the chickens. After working on this project for another 3 hours this morning....I'm having serious 2nd thoughts about even having a run. It would indeed be too hard to get in there and clean with my current design so now I'm...

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

OK...the saga continues. I decided to dig down the 4 inches (and out 15 inches) around the coop because besides the obvious pleasure I'd get from frustrating a digging predator, we also have 6 grandchildren under the age of 4 and the edges of the hardware cloth is pretty sharp...it'll possibly...

Thank you ddawn & everyone else for your answers and patience with my questions. ddawn, I was hoping you were a little closer than Valdosta so I could see your setup but I only go thru Valdosta twice a year on my way to Florida to visit my Mom and we were just there. Oh well... I've already...

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

...and here's another question I have that I can't seem to find an answer to....How do I make my coop "adequately ventilated" yet keep it draft free? Do I just not understand the terminology?

Quote: ddawn, Where are you in "South Georgia"? I'm in Social Circle. I live about 3 miles off of I-20 about 1/2 way between Atlanta & Augusta. I read about the 3 sided coops being OK but am building a 4 sided one... I was just planning on a lot of hardware cloth ventilation. I bought...

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

Thanks for all the advice....I'll keep reading. The run is 5' tall but it probably looks shorter than that because I'm 6'5" and my son (who is married and has 3 little girls ) is 6' 10". I think it's too far along to change it now. My wife clean the run? She'd die laughing at me if I...

    A chicken rookie's coop project...

Good morning y'all... About 2 months ago, my wife and I received a gift of about a 1/2 dozen fresh eggs. She made the comment "Wouldn't it be nice to have our own fresh eggs" and here we go. I started reading this forum every day and made a mental note of the ideas and/or suggestions that I...
