Winter is Coming! Checklists, tips, advice for a newbie

We are having an ice storm right now and the path is super slippery. I've sanded twice just so I can safely get to the coop and the mailman can make it to the mailbox. It seems to hardly make a difference. This last time I resorted to salting. I hate doing it because it irritates my dogs feet...

We had our first decent snow storm the other day, bringing us 16" of snow. Today it's -19F and according to weather.com it feels like -32 (which having just been out there I would agree with). Here are some pictures of my girls out in the area I shoveled for them. They aren't bothered by the...

I love Homer! I've been there twice. The first time I was 20 and spent all week fishing the spit. The second time I was 24 and spent all week at the pub with the crooked bar. Salty something, right? Lol. It's a beautiful place.

Red light is better for heat because it doent distrupt sleep patterns. White light is frequently used to extend daylight hours to promote egg laying. Since your girls are so young, you don't need white light.

is the fog on the window or on the plastic. I get fog on the inside of the plastic from time to time, but it's usually from moisture that got trapped from outside (ex: rain got in and sat in the bottom - not a lot, just a few drips). If you have fog or frost inside the window, then you have a...

Very nice! I like your setup. My coop is too small for a remodel, so I'm stuck with a lot of woodda, coodda, shooddas. Especially when it comes to poop trays.

I lock up my girls once it's dark (since if there is a hint of light they'll all come running out of the coop to see if I have treats). Since they are asleep when I lock up, I sneak in with a waterer of really warm (but not hot) water. It seems to prevent frozen water in the morning most of the...

I made a wind block for my eaves. I attached a 1"x3" board to the rafters. It allows air to exchange but does not allow wind to blow in.

Winter is Coming! Checklists, tips, advice for a newbie

I started winterizing today. I got plastic on about 3/4 of the run. I didn't want to cover the whole thing yet since we are still getting the occasional 80 degree day, despite the majority of days being 40s with a cold breeze. I also pulled the sand from the coop and put it in the run with some...

My coop is 2' off the ground and I currently have sand in it. I live in Maine where it is super cold and snowy. I am thinking of pulling the sand soon and switching to pine for the winter. I'll keep the sand in the run, but I might lay out some straw and leaf litter over it.

My girl was received severely hen pecked and sunburned. She wore a lightweight apron most of the summer. If she doesn't show huge feather growth soon, I might make her a polar fleece one for winter. They are super easy to make and you don't actually have to sew the fleece ones since they stretch...
