So... sometimes we get pretty weird answers to the required question. A person tried to join BYC that already had their email in the "blacklist" of potential spammers, but when I looked at their answer I saw this: :th

This required field is doing a great job in both: 1) Helping us to really understand why people are joining BYC 2) Keep the spammers out For example, the system marked someone that might be a spammer, and when I went to look at the reason why they joined BYC, this is what I saw:

Here's another fun example of a spammer's reply to the "why did I join BYC" question: "I have a belief that I get rich out of a single bird of any kind if I have the knowledge! And its true, knowledge is the money, the Capital, the drive etc. All i need is the will!"

It's working! The system scored this new member pretty high on the "potential spam" list: Then I clicked over to the "why join BYC" field and saw this: Is that supposed to be the number of chickens he wants to raise!?!? ;)

We've gone back-n-forth on this. A lot of people are very sensitive about their locations, so we've opted not to require it. We may edit this so we at least ask for their state (and they can always lie if they are super concerned) ;)

No way... that would be a crazy amount of work with like 200 people joining every day ;) For spammers, we have a about 20 things that are warning-flags for a spammer. If someone is "on the fence", sometimes what they wrote in that box can help push them one way or another ;)

It's actually really interesting! People joining to share their love of chickens.... or to ask turkey questions, or for emergency help. All kinds of reasons! Actually, let me grab a bunch at random: I loved this one: returning to a meaningful REAL LIFE style !! just added 6 Red Comet chicks...
