Wow! Your chicken should make a suspense movie! Really hoping she pulls through all this. I was so sad to see that she took a turn for the worse yesterday. You have worked so hard to get her back to good health.
That is a great way to break her. We have tried placing ice under the hen several times, physically removing her several times, just about everything. Everything except remove the nest box, or the hen from the next box. Thanks for the great idea when another decides she wants to brood!

That is normal broody hens to loose weight. It would be a personal choice on if you want chicks though the winter or not. You could make a brooder box and put it in the garage if its cold where you are. Or you could just discourage her. She will not lay eggs until she is done...
I don't think the blue jays would have been the source. If it is Mareks, it was probably in the individual bird all along, or it was spread from another chicken. You can even visit another farm with Mareks & carry it back to your farm.

Oh no! I hope its not Merek's. That was my 1st thought when I read your original post. But I am not experienced with it, so I did not want to suggest it. I just know from reading that they have varying degrees of the disease and some do not even display symptoms. But once one of your chickens...
