Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

Unfortunately, she hasn't done it again. Now she just runs at them and they run away.

Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

Chicks are six weeks old today. They are doing fantastic. Some warmer dry days finally here so they have been going out for supervised ranging. Ophelia isn't very friendly toward them she puts her wings out sideways and forward with her head down and makes noises I've never heard before. The...

Thank you. They seem to be greatly enjoying their new digs. They've been flying up to the top of the crate and then flying back down. Tonight they went into their huddle box without any assistance! :D

I put paneling up around most of the bottom. Left some open space between Ophelia's coop and the chick area so they can see each other. I've also upgraded the huddle box. The chicks were already checking it out when I went to get more pine shavings to insulate between the two crates.

Thank you. I can do that. :)

Thank you. How much area would need the wind blocking?

Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

I made the chicks their own small 3' x 5' run next to Ophelia's coop/run. At first I put the big dog crate inside they've been in for the past 3 weeks, but it took up too much room. Now I just have a cat carrier with shavings and the bottom half of a small dog crate turned upside down with their...

Oh good. Didn't want to do this now when they haven't been using one. Thank you both!

Do I need to make them a Wooly Hen or Mama Heating pad? :hmm

Yes right next to the crate door has the last of the light.

Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

Hmm my chicks must still not get the fact their box is warmer than huddling by the crate door. Totally dark and I had to put them in the box again. I'll try again tomorrow.

The crate is quite dark on all these overcast days. I'll try turning the light off several hours before sunset to see if that gets them moving into the huddle box. They did stay in the box all night last night w/o me checking on them. :)

I was thinking the same thing. LOL Hoping the magic happens tonight, the plan is to turn off the light and see if they go in by themselves. If not, I'll give them a push into the box and not check them until the morning. Now if I can just stick to the plan. :D

Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

Checked them before going to bed at 11 and they were silent and still in the box. Checked at 1:30 am still in box, 3:30 am still in box, 6:00 am still in box. Turned on their light at 7 am and immediately heard peeping. Out came one, then another and finally the last one. Now tonight, I'm going...

Thank you for the link. Unfortunately, even with Prime, the heating pad would not be here before this weekend and we're not in an area where we can get same day delivery. :( I've been checking on them and since I fixed the box, they are staying inside it.

Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

They did pretty good most of the night but sometime early morning (after the last time I checked on them at 4 am), the pillow case came out of the inside of the box. They were huddled in the corner and didn't want to go back in the box. I tried to find a heating pad to make them a Mama Heating...

I just checked on them and they're still in the box and the silence is golden! I agree they need to have night. Thank you again for the huddle box suggestion. :)

I will be making them a safety zone. :)

Integrating chicks into flock at 4 weeks old.

Okay that's the part I was worried about. Going straight from being warm to the cold. I can sympathize with the trauma and abandonment issues, I have plenty. I did make them a huddle box out of an empty box, lined with the insulation from a Home Chef shipment and then put inside a pillow case...
