No scab that I can see, just the two huge swollen spots on her toe and ankle. After doing some more reading, I think she might be vitamin A deficient? Because her feathers aren’t in great shape, and her bill is peeling. The food she’s on right now has lots of vitamin A, and I’m also adding...

Thank you, that really means a lot 🥲. Still hard to tell if the antibiotics are working—some days she seems slightly improved, but it’s not consistent. Her follow up vet appointment got bumped up to tomorrow, so we’ll see what the vet says. I’ll tell Boop that people are rooting for her!

She’s about the same! Maybe her swelling has gone down a tiny bit? That might be wishful thinking on my part. We named her Boop. Her appetite is good and she doesn’t seem to be in too much pain! We still have another full week of antibiotics left.

@Marie2020 Thank you for checking in! I think for now, we will finish this round of antibiotics and then see what the vet says at her next check up. I really appreciate the information you’ve shared, I think we will probably end up trying many different things over the next months. Pekins do...

    Dumped ducks in Central Kentucky

I called the Humane Society, who directed me to Animal Care and Control. The dispatcher I talked to was pretty dismissive, so my partner and I decided to go ahead and catch them. From what I could gather from the internet, it’s illegal to dump domestic ducks on public land, but catching and...

    Dumped ducks in Central Kentucky

I really appreciate your offer! I’m not sure at this point if wrapping her foot will help, but I’ll ask the vet at her next check up. At some point, I’m sure I’ll have questions about the specific antibiotics that you ended up using, but it’s still early days. The vet didn’t x-ray her foot, he...

That’s amazing! I’m so glad that she healed up and has you to take care of her. Lucky duck ♥️. The vet just said to limit her mobility so she doesn’t step on anything hard or sharp. Right now we’re planning on keeping her outside in a small pen in the grass during the day and inside in a...

SMZ-Pediatric. It's the same antibiotic this vet has prescribed literally every time we've brought a chicken or duck to him, but it's also worked so far. That's amazing!! Did you continue to treat with antibiotics after the vet declined further treatment? I read that proper nutrition...

    Dumped ducks in Central Kentucky

The vet confirmed that it's bumblefoot and prescribed an oral antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory. Tomorrow we're going to take the two healthy ducks to the farm, which has a big pond and other ducks, so hopefully they'll adjust quickly. I'll keep the one with bumblefoot and treat her here. I...

    Dumped ducks in Central Kentucky

Maybe advanced bumblefoot? Her right leg and foot both have areas that are very swollen, and she’s not able to put much weight on that side. She falls over easily. I didn’t inspect her leg closely—I’ve been trying to handle them as little as possible since I’m sure this is already incredibly...

    Dumped ducks in Central Kentucky

Success! We have the ducks in a temporary pen for now, and a nearby farm has agreed to take them. I’m taking the one with an injured leg to our avian vet tomorrow, but after observing her today, I’m concerned her leg may be too far gone ☹️.

Yes, I’m definitely considering that, though I’m not able to do anything further tonight. I’m really hoping the HS will say they’ll be able to take them, and then we can catch them and drop them off tomorrow. But if not, I’ll talk to my roommates and maybe plan for a temporary home in the bathroom.

    Dumped ducks in Central Kentucky

My partner and I just discovered three abandoned ducks in one of our city parks—two Pekins and what appears to be a Blue Swedish duck. One of the Pekins has a very bad limp and a swollen leg. All three sound like females. Unfortunately, our backyard is at capacity. I already posted in the...
