    In a bit of a hijack here, can I say that I find it totally fascinating that if you don't have a roo, the hens all treat you like YOU are the rooster, and if you DO have a roo, HE tries to treat you like a hen. Kinda makes you wonder... well, maybe not, I guess they don't call them bird-brains...

    Reaching out to him that way, patting him or whatever may be the right thing to do. At least you're not acting fearful, which IS a bad thing. I'd do whatever feels right. If he backs off after you've patted him, it's probaly good. If he keeps it up, maybe he needs to be pushed away a bit, or...

    Agreeing with all you've been told so far. If he scares you that much, invite him to supper. It doesn't sound like you enjoy having him in the yard. BTW, he doesn't think that hen is yours, he thinks it's HIS. If you can't be fearless around him, and deal with him if he gets agressive...
