    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Okay I read the black sex link portion and guess I understand better now - black chicks with white spots would be male, black with no spots female, great link, thanks Ron!

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Oh my, look at all that boyish charm! So let me ask, besides the fairly obvious combs, I notice that there are two who look darker/browner/less barred than the others, and I'm not sure whether it's the picture or a delayed autosexing feature coming through, if in fact those two are the ones you...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I finally have some pics to share of the Silkies I hatched NYD and the following Saturday. The LF chicks all went to a new home today before I was able to get pics of them, which is fine, I picked up 36 eggs today to set and even though I managed to put my back out today, with a bit of luck we...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I, too, would eagerly follow this experiment either here or on its own thread, so please let us know if another thread is started on this experiment. ChickenCanoe, I commend you for committing to this - it is very time-consuming, and I have long wondered whether fermenting for chicks was worth...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Congratulations to all the winners and participants, and heartfelt thanks to all who offered information, support, encouragement and camaraderie. This was the first time I participated in a hatch-along and it was a lot more educational that I expected! Ron, thank you a thousand times for being...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I was chuckling at the notion of being asleep at 4 pm - DH and I both fell asleep watching a movie yesterday afternoon, luckily I had already given everyone their afternoon scratch, woke up in time to down a cup of coffee and hustle outside to collect dishes, turn off the radio in the big coop...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

If a hen is inclined to be broody, she can possibly be encouraged by leaving eggs/fake eggs in the nest. The magic number is said to be 7, although I have not tried this so I don't have personal experience to go by. If it's a hen that has no interest, nothing will encourage her. Hatcheries...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

That's a good sized bird, for sure, but nothing like the BBB a friend raised last year that hit 53 lbs before processing LOL. I have never raised any kind of turkey, so this will be a learning curve for me if I hatch any. Fingers crossed!

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

ChickenCanoe, those pics are just heartwarming, all those beautiful, healthy chicks! Glad you had such a nice hatch - I notice there seems to be variation in how much yellow the chicks have on their faces, does that indicate anything about their appearance as adults? I do not envy the weather...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Susceptibility is primarily between the ages of 5 weeks and 5 months. Once they are 6 months or older their immune systems should be able to deal with it. There are never guarantees, these are living beings.

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Marek's is the bane of my existence. I lost an entire shipment of beautiful Speckled Sussex chicks to Marek's. It has multiple forms, and once a bird becomes symptomatic it is almost always fatal (the percentage of those surviving it is fractional, and most of those birds are compromised for...
