Agree 100% with JP....Buy....pack....light...and puff a smoker! You will not regret it and the bees really aren't adversly effected by the use of it either. Always have my smoker lit when crackin open the hives....though it doesnt always stay lit through every hive.. Congrats on the new bees...

I would reassure anyone considering which hive type is better that in general a top bar hive is best for the hobbyist who only wants a hive or two and who is more concerned about preserving our honeybee rather than how much honey they can extract from the hive. I'm sorry and not trying to butt...

I'm "trying" to keep out black bear. We have quiet a few around the mountain. Let me tell you right now if the bear is hungry enough the hives would have to be in a vault to keep them from getting them. Id would also like to say for people in colder climates...the biggest mistake you can do with...

I try to run all screened bottom boards on my langstroths already. I have tried a hybrid topbar hive that could be supered with lang boxes. I will post some pictures later. This hive was pretty good but became difficult in managing and sooner than later the bees made it almost impossible to pull...

By removing one frame on a topbar you still are disturbing the bees. Opening up that crack is still lowering the hive temperature. Sure it isn't as bad as taking off a whole lang super but this isn't necessary on most inspections. With a topbar hive you will also get a lot more bur comb aka...

The topbar hive itself really doesn't do anything to keep the bees from being 100% treatment free except for the fact it allows the bees to build NATURAL comb. The fate of your bees will depend on a lot of things whether or not they succeed at being treatment free. You will need a queen and bees...

Coming from someone who has tryed topbar hives..foundationless langs..and standard foundation setup langstroths....either go with one or the other. It is all personal choice but I was looking at what was best for my bees, would provide with me easy means to raise queens, was easy to manipulate...

Jp said what I was going to say...immediatley after dumping the bees in you should gently replace all frames and make sure they are tight. You might kill a few bees but that is beekeeping you will not go especially your first year without killing bees. With that extra gap that was created by...

Nice video...but the quiet/peaceful thing won't last long once a few frames of brood hatch and the hive is hitting some strong nectar flow. It will be BOOMING. Bees constantly coming and going. I mean it isn't really LOUD but compared to when first started youll know when you have a strong hive...

And you can have healthy bees in both Langstroth hives and Topbar. I have kept/worked with all styles of hive. If you want the best of both worlds try and combo hive. Beewrangle...who use to have a website you could google not sure if he does anymore worked with these. I have two currently. They...

I feel this really depends a lot more on the queen than it does the RACE anymore. Almost all bees are a mix anymore. Well shouldn't say that but most Italians are. And DONT GET ANY BUCKFAST queens from TEXAS!!! I only trust Canadian breeders for buckfast queens. My apiary right now is soley...

I use all medium equipment....8 frame. And each frame has a popsicle stick/small strip of wood glued in as a comb guide. I also have combo hives that are topbars that can be supered with Lang equipment.
