That's great news!! But don't trade the stress of health for the stress of sexing, LOL!! It's to early. I've always been wrong on my suspects, no joke. I even had a OE with a dot on "her," head and everyone said cockerel, but she lays gorgeous green eggs !! 🥰 💚
I started out a long time ago with cardboard and then realized that all of the time I put into modiying it, I could have just put into a wooden box, with hardware cloth top and sides for better ventilation. At a minimum, you could put OSB in the floor of the box.
Good to know that you for sure know how to do this successfully. In trying to determine root cause, the things that haven't changed are: time of year, Hoover's is source/ Rural King is re seller, location of brooder in your house, brooder type, feed. Coccidiosis as people say is rare at this age...
It's your call but I would really just stop acquiring chicks right now if this was happening to me. I'd start all over again in a few weeks. I'd get water tested to rule out issues, build a brooder I could feel confident about, without question, get chicks from somewhere else. I am not...
Oh I beg to differ, you're a great educator, certainly are more experienced than little ole me! 🤩 Was it Coach123 that's good at this stuff? I got amazing information via Coach123 when I had some little's with Coccidiosis....
Very good question about the Corid! I forgot to mention that you do not want to give them anything with thiamin (vitamin B1) in it. So I would stop the other supplements in favor of full dose Corid. And if you discover bloody poo, puffed up chicks, symptoms that make you confident you're dealing...
I didnt read this whole thread, but just wanted you to not feel alone....... https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/my-chicks-are-dying-hoovers-hatchery.1567266/
Geeze I'm sorry I'm reading to fast, you did already say that they sourced Hoovers. Okay Hoovers may have alot of fans, but I'm not one of them. Definitely ask Rural King about vaccinations. Often they are to cheap to get that option so the chicks are not vaccinated for Mereks. But again, it...
I called my feed store immediately when I discovered cocci in a bunch of only 5, a few years back. Indeed other people had been calling too so it came the hatchery or happened at the feed store as they were vaccinated for Mereks but not Coccidiosis. Corid fixed them all.
Sorry, I dont want to terrify you as it's a good chance they ARE vaccinated for Mereks because Rural king sources a large hatchery (not sure which one.) Just to be sure though, maybe call Rural King and tell them what's going on, see if others are having this issue (if they'd tell you,) at the...
Coccidiosis, high temp, Teflon, Stress.... These are the chick death causes that I can think of. I really hope others jump on here with other ideas. This has to suck for you! But don't give up, it's clear you're doing your best.
Do you have any Nutri Drench or Save a chick? Also, I know that everything you read says to start out at incredibly high temps but also do a forum search on excessive brooder temps and you'll find many, many chicken keepers that don't believe high temps are good. Thermometers can be wrong. You...
If you do a forum search for "Teflon," maybe you can determine what bulb you have, is it Teflon or not. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/need-help-for-my-baby-keets-all-looked-fine-now-bleeding-and-dieing.1585604/#post-26941134
At least to rule in / out that possibility.
