My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

Tre3hugger hasn't been on the site since January. I don't know if something happened to him or if it was just the loss of his flock to a bobcat. Hopefully he is doing well.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

Yes from FR. I was feeding them a local mix, nongmo soy free 18%. I think there was a doz total? They were getting am and pm 3/4 of a 3 qt scoop soaked. They did have access to the layer flocks feed but that was also measured and their roo protected it pretty well.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

I should mention they have been on a maintainence ration for the last month +. They were still in with the hens and I want them thin enough to start laying. Could easily have put another pound on them.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

I can give you some data on mine if that helps. I butchered 4 Nh Roos yesterday @17 weeks. Weather and projects let them go a month longer then I had wanted too. The smallest bird I kept whole, fully dressed no neck or feet 6.5lbs. I did not take weights on the others but one was easily 8lbs...

That hurts. And its always your best breeding stock that they take. Hopefully the skirting works.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

Great job! I've done only 1 older Roo. Similar age. Tried skinning him, it took 3 times the time as a young one. The meat on him was a dark red and flavourful. I ended up making a version of coq au vin the "dry" version with cider vinegar. Absolutely deliscious.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

I would reccomend keeping both of the heavies if you can. Just incase one turns out to be a dud, and to have a spare. Nothing ruins your project more then loosing your Roos.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

I've taken to putting my potential breed stock out with the layers. They get a measured18% twice a day and forage inbetween, Just for this reason. It keeps them a little more trim.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

Were they properly marked? Thats what I was going for with this project, was going for sexable at hatch. I have maybe 7-8 cockerels in the meat pen but they didnt have the wing spot.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

If you dont mind marking any of the nh chicks with white wing spots and no dark head spots, I will most likely be taking you up on the offer.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

Sorry for your loss as well. My perimeter fence needs tightening so there are a few spots they can slip between it and the hotwire at the top.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

Did a head count. Lost all but 1 marked male who was already slated for the meat pen. And they killed the 2 best project females. Left with 2 females for the project and 1 is iffy, might be male. Bastard. Did this to me last year, Right about POL. Wiped out my breeding stock. AGAIN. Might set...

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

Might need to get a NH rooster chick off you. My grow out pen for my project birds got hit last night by a coon. Both rooster chicks are gone. A sold chick is ate and 2 marked project females.:mad: I saw the gap in their pen too. Was going to fix it today.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

Be careful with this as they get older. My NH girls are integrated with a normal layer flock, and being bigger then 2-3 of the other hens together, they will muscle anyone out of the way and park. I have to spilt their feedings between 3 feeders to ensure the others get feed.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

Well apparently I only have 3 adult NHs. The 2 2 yr olds were 10 and 12lbs, one of them has not molted since reaching adulthood. And the 1yr old weighed 11lbs. But carries it well, no obvious fat deposits. They were not happy birds.

This is peak season though. They will drop production with the heat and cold.

My Attempt at a Dual Purpose Heritage Flock

If I have time this weekend I will grab some weights and pics of my oldest NH hens, they are 2 this year. Big girls, will give you a better idea om why rationing is so very important with them.
