This is the experience I've seen other ppl mention, that treating roos like pets gives them the impression that you're submitting to them. The hands off approach, I have hear/read/experienced, is the way for them to learn that they are to submit to the humans. I don't baby or coddle my roosters...

Yes it was, some of those in the ice and snow were having trouble with giving their chickens water instead of ice blocks. lol Brilliant idea!!!

As long as the heating pad is kept around 100*F, it shouldn't catch the straw/hay on fire. I can imagine this not being a fire hazard, but it would have to be watched carefully. I'm sticking with heat lamps, personally though. ;)

Does anyone know this? If you have a pullet in a flock of mating hens and rooster(s), does the rooster mating with the pullet lead to her laying eggs or does her laying eggs lead to him mating with her?
