Well, with fabrics, the darker the material, the more quickly and effectively it heats up, so I would very much assume this is the case with fur and feathers. I know my blacks take the heat alot worse than my white. One of my hens could never survive that southern weather. She pants in 70 degrees!

These are a few months old but I never posted them on this thread...This was right after I gave my roo a bath and about a week after he started his moult... All of my Silkies are finally molting! Sadly, someone took a chomp out of said rooster and I don't think those feathers will be...

Dark blues are annoying. The girl in my avatar is dark blue, but when she was younger the seller wasn't completely sure. The biggest difference I see between her and my blacks is the rear end. Blacks have pure black butt feathering but her's is a lighter blue.

Quote: Other colors? Like other colored feathering showing up on the black? To make sure mine don't have any color leakage or undesired coloring, I keep watch until they are roughly 6 or 7 months old. Sometimes that bad coloring can just 'pop up' on you. Coloring is a good start to weed out...

I'd leave hatcheries out and just buy from breeders. Hatchery Silkies aren't very 'nice looking', when you compare to the birds that have had work put into them by great breeders.

Quote: I'm so sorry. I've also had that happen recently. Roo's just fine one day and then they're dead the next? Good luck finding a boy.

Muddyhorse-Is that roo bearded or non? I love his coloring. Here's some pics of Crix when I brought him home and some a few months ago-I never seem to catch him how I want to. And I thought I was bringing home a girl! What did I know? (When I did buy him-it was before the obvious hackles...

Thanks for the responses regarding the shampoos. I wasn't looking to use any-just curious. My birds are rarely in the sun-and although I would like to start giving them some freedom-it will be limited. Besides my female's crest, coloring is fine-and right now my black male looks the best. Still...

Not sure if it was brought up, but has anyone tried that shampoo for black and dark colored birds that is sometimes sold at shows? I never get a good look at it but I always wondered what it was...

Whatever is up with the water, it got worse when I switched from plastic to metal waterers this late fall. Before then, the birds would dunk faces but it would dry regularly. So, yeah, sometime is sticking onto the waterer and then onto the feathers. That particular girl is going to be out of...

Quote: Our water is well water; I'm pretty sure there's no chlorine in it. But Sulfur is a high possibility. Would that do it? In addition to the rusty coloring, the beard feathers also seem to get weak and break off. I can't wait for my girl to moult out-she is totally out of condition.

As anyone noticed that a black bird repeatedly dunking it's beard in their water can ruin the color (and strength?) of the beard-feathering? I have a new mystery that I'm trying to solve. My camara shows and overly exaggerated (bad camara: her coloring is correct on all places but the beard)...
