Not only was the poster not in CT, it was posted almost 12 years ago :lau
Just teasing with you, but if you are looking for call ducks, it might be helpful to pay attention to the post dates.
Beautiful ducks @katie246 :love
I’m jealous!
As far as pairings, what are your goals? Do you want to make standard colors or best type, or any plans to show them?
You will fall in love with these ducks. It’s impossible not to.
Yes I think so. And there are good breeders that can produce SQ offspring, but maybe not all offspring will be SQ.
I also think it gets used for birds that are high quality, but just aren’t shown, so saying show quality seems like a bit much?
That’s my impression anyway.
Well “best” is a relative term. :D
Depends whether you are looking for pet quality, show quality, breeder quality. Eggs, ducklings, or adults? But check FB groups, or maybe CL you may find some. Many calls are done laying for the year, I believe. I’m getting an egg about every other day.
Well.... I did rob a few of the eggs from 2 of my girls nests. We were having freezing overnight temps and they weren't sitting on them all night yet anyway. :hide
When I turned my 18 eggs on day 4 this morning, I stuck my flashlight to them, and confirmed life in 15. The other 3 are still possible, they looked orange-ish, just didn't see the spider web yet. :fl
Saw you were in Maryland, thought we might be close, but you're wayyyy over there! LOL
Duck egg bloom is interesting. I noticed the ones I just set seem to be much less waxy bloom than last fall, and alot less than the ones I hatched from @Ravynscroft 's flock. I assume these will lose...
I start with no water. For me, I find it works easier if the air cells are too large, just increase the humidity. When they are too small, it's more difficult to catch up by lowering humidity. It's really humid where I live, so even with no water, "dry" for me means about 25-30%.
Yes, the cooling and misting is closest to natural. I'm just not sure about the rotation. I'll be curious to see how it goes for you. I'm not discouraging it... it could work great!
This is from Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks. They do say they have increased results with misting. I think...
I've only incubated them a few times, so no expert with them. But I have them in a Brinsea Octagon 20, 3 rows of 6 eggs, laying on their sides. I pick up one egg on the end, roll the other 5 toward the empty spot, rotate the egg in hand, and place it back in the newly opened spot on the other...
